The first in Valve’s Dota Major Championship series, the Frankfurt Majors ended with an unlikely run by OG. The European qualifiers took home the trophy and the $1,100,000 prize beating favorites Team Secret 3-1 in the finals to cap off their Cinderella run.
Through the tournament, OG defeated TI5 champions Evil Geniuses, TI5 runner ups CDEC and the powerhouse of Team Secret. They made their run entirely in the lower bracket and seemed cool, calm and collected through it all. OG was the first team to even reach the finals through the lower bracket. They won over a new fan base and had the Frankfurt crowd behind them with great play and unique lineups.
Game 1 was dominated by OG with 36 – 12 in kills and pushing for mega creeps in 32 minutes, not even losing a single tower in mid or bottom lanes. The game started fast as the teams clashed 5v5 before runes even spawned. OG collected first blood and was able to pick off two heroes but lost three heroes in the engagement. In minute 8, EnternaLEnVy got a triple kill, led the charts in net worth, and looked ready to steamroll, but OG countered with smart, calculated fights, and getting the better of Secret in every engagement.
Game 2 was the most competitive match in the series. It started off slower than game 1 with first blood coming on the 4 minute mark with pieliedie contesting the bottom rune and getting taken out by N0tail and Miracle-. The game was back and forth with many tense moments but was won by OG in the 65th minute to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best of 5.
Team Secret was able to get their only win in the series in game 3. Secret dominated the whole match but clinched their victory on the 38-minute mark by wiping OG and taking Roshan, giving them the ability to push high ground. Within the minute OG tapped out and called GG giving Secret the victory.
OG took the final game of the series in a controlling fashion. They were able to push in the bottom lane within 18 minutes and get the GG call on the 34th minute wiping Team Secret and getting mega creeps.
OG was the Cinderella story of the Major and took on the giants of Dota 2 in charismatic fashion. This young team showed they are more than ready to take on the big boys of Dota. It will be a joy to watch them in future tournaments.
