The whirlwind that is New York Fashion Week has wrapped and while there were 190 plus collections for the fashionable thousands to see, it also provided an opportunity for brands not on the runway calendar to showcase their Spring ‘16 collections. One such brand was California based OBEY Clothing.
On September 14 and 15, OBEY presented a capsule of their Spring / Summer 2016 womens, mens and accessories’ collections at The Refinery Hotel in midtown Manhattan.
Created by renown contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey and stemming from the already established OBEY GIANT campaign; OBEY Clothing is an extension of Fairey’s work giving another platform to his message and ideology in the self- empowerment of those who refuse to be manipulated.
Giving a nod to pop culture, music, political messaging, retro vintage and military-inspiration, the women’s and men’s Spring/Summer ’16 collection tells a story available in many color waves, with more pastel huess for the women; that blend minimal branding, clean lines and iconic graphics with relaxed materials, mixed knits, jacquard, denim, structured and light weights.
The women’s collection features midi length skirts, moto, velour and coach-style jackets, tees, lounge wear, dresses, culottes, jumpers, and pajama sets (that will also be available for Christmas holiday purchase) and for the men, the OBEY x HUF collaboration due out in March 2016.
Artist enthusiasts, the Womens Artist Series, brings a collaboration featuring the artwork of Australian artist and photographer Cloudy Rhodes and a special print collection, has been produced, the Shepard Fairey x Jamie Reed Print Collaboration in honor of artist Jamie Reid, think Sex Pistols, one of Fairey’s biggest influences. The collection is comprised of screen print editions and a series of unique, hand-collaged Fine Art Editions (HPMs). Each edition will be signed by both artists.
Looking at clothes as agreat way to share ideas, another extension of the OBEY family is the OBEY Awareness Program, created to educate and fundraise for causes and organizations that OBEY supports. OBEY donates 100% of the proceeds to the chosen causes. The Joe Strummer Foundation is their benefit and all proceeds from the Joe Strummer Classic Print Tee, will go to The Human Trial fund in the race to find a cure for diabetes.
