As predictable as rain in the Pacific Northwest, President Barack Obama is using yesterday’s attack on a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado to push for tougher gun control laws, specifically pointing to so-called “assault weapons,” according to USA Today.
Police took Robert Lewis Dear, 57, into custody following a five-hour standoff after he allegedly gunned down several people, killing two private citizens and a civilian peace officer. The New York Daily News is reporting today that the murder suspect allegedly told investigators, “No more baby parts.’
It is not clear what motivated the North Carolina man to travel to Colorado Springs. Images of the disheveled, gray-bearded suspect have been posted all over by the various news media, including the Daily News. He will reportedly be in court Monday.
Today’s call for gun control by Obama follows a pattern that he set after the Sandy Hook tragedy nearly three years ago. Demanding that “we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them,” the president said “Enough is enough.”
One of the three dead was Officer Garrett Swasey, 44. He was an officer from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, responding to the shooting, news reports said.
The president’s repeated calls for gun control have encountered resistance from Capitol Hill and a recent CNN/ORC poll revealed that opposition to more gun control is strong. The poll said 52 percent of Americans “now oppose stricter gun control laws,” while 46 percent do.
Also last month, Gallup reported that its poll revealed 56 percent of Americans believe the country would be safer if more people carried concealed firearms. That poll was taken Oct. 7-11.
By demanding more gun control and bans on what is essentially the most popular rifle in the United States — the semi-auto modern sport-utility rifle now used by millions of people for recreation, predator and varmint hunting, home defense and competition — the president and his gun control allies continue trying to penalize law-abiding gun owners for crimes they did not commit. Watch for another spike in the sales of such guns, which is equally predictable after each new call for gun control.
Earlier this month, Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and founder of the Second Amendment Foundation told the Washington Free Beacon that Obama, and would-be successor Hillary Rodham Clinton, “are the best gun salespeople on the planet.”
“The more they scream for gun control laws, the more guns walk off the shelves at gun stores,” he said.
