In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, people in the United States and throughout the world must wonder why the response from the American president has amounted to little more than requisite lip service to an unspeakable tragedy. A November 16th Associated Press report stated, “President Barack Obama on Monday conceded that the Paris terror attacks were a ‘terrible and sickening setback’ in the fight against the Islamic State”. He went on to say, “The strategy that we are putting forward is the strategy that is ultimately going to work”.
Both the AP report and Obama’s statements contain interesting, and telling, word choices. It is beyond comprehension, that any rational human being, much less the president of the United States of America, would “concede” that a well-planned and organized attack that killed over 130 civilians was “terrible and sickening”. It is also beyond comprehension that any rational human being, much less the president of the United States of America would reference a strategy that has proven totally ineffective as being, “the strategy that is ultimately going to work”.
Whether Obama is delusional, out of touch with reality, or both, is a subject unto itself. However, his tepid responses to the ongoing terror attacks by Islamic organizations such as ISIS speaks to both delusion, and a disconnect from reality. In the Obama world view, Islamists are victims, perhaps the ultimate victims. As such, he believes they should be handled more like mischievous children than cold-blooded killers.
Responding to the carnage in Paris, Obama continued to espouse his belief in the delusion that radical Islamist groups can be contained through negotiation, and by drawing imaginary lines in the sand. This in spite of the fact that ISIS continues to kill hundreds of innocent people and threatens to continue doing so.
According to Marc A. Thiessen, writing in the Washington Post, the latest Islamist threat was issued by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State, who stated, “Our last message is to the Americans: Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day. So watch, for we are with you, watching.” And following the Paris attacks, the Islamic State released a new video in which it warned, “By God, as we struck France in the center of its abode in Paris, then we swear that we will strike America at its center in Washington.”
Rather than acknowledging the source of these threats, one of which boasts, “the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day”, (a direct confrontation with the United States) Obama instead refuses to identify the terrorist attacks in Paris, or anywhere else in the world, as having been perpetrated by “the sons of Islam”.
True to form, Obama stays the course of his perceived political correctness by ignoring reality. Rather than taking decisive action, he plays word games in hopes of not offending anyone who embraces Islam. In January of this year, following the Charlie Hebdo attack, also in Paris, White House press secretary Josh Earnest defined the extent of Obama’s disconnect from reality. Speaking to the press corps, Earnest addressed questions from National Public Radio’s Mara Liasson about the White House bending over backwards to avoid using the words, “radical Islam”. Earnest stated that it wouldn’t be accurate to call the Paris attackers “Radical Islamists”.
His justification for turning a blind eye to reality was, “these terrorists are individuals who would like to cloak themselves in the veil of a particular religion.” It’s a matter of fact that the terrorists who carried out the Paris attacks in January and November were radical Islamists; they didn’t cloak themselves in a veil, they exposed their beliefs and acted upon them, in full view of the world.
One can argue that radical Islamists do not represent the true beliefs of the broader Muslim population. However, there can be no argument that these terrorists do represent those followers of Islam who would either subjugate or kill anyone not in agreement with them. Obama’s refusal to acknowledge that faction neither eliminates it nor “contains” it. And by continuing to view the reality of radical Islam as nothing more than cloaks and veils, he has assured a future riddled with more Paris-style attacks.
