The Oakland Raiders are willing to be realigned to a new conference division if the franchise had to move to Los Angeles. The move so far is to go to Carson and share a stadium with the San Diego Chargers who are also willing to switch to a new conference as well.
As reported on Monday, a hired overseer of the Carson project Carmen Policy has stated that both teams, the Raiders and the Chargers, have agreed to switch conferences if the stadium in Carson materializes and both teams end up calling it home. This agreement came to light since both teams are currently in the same division and sharing a stadium could bring up some issues. Of course, this is the potential scenario that is still being worked on by the NFL and both teams.
Policy also stated that the division shift could be proposed when the stadium’s design is finalized. Now the question to ask, if this project comes to life and the Raiders share a stadium with the Chargers, who will get to switch if the Raiders and Chargers come to Carson and represent Los Angeles?
Well, it was mentioned that the Oakland Raiders might get to be the most likely candidate to go to the NFC West instead of the San Diego Chargers. This predicted move by the Raiders is based on ProFootballTalk’s report back in February.
PFT stated that the best scenario would be for the Raiders to move to the NFC West. Now, who will make the switch from the NFC West to the AFC West? The best bets were the Arizona Cardinals or the St. Louis Rams according to PFT.
See, the Seattle Seahawks already made a switch from the AFC West to the NFC West many years back when the league had to realign and make all divisions comprised of four teams. The San Francisco 49ers were not mentioned at all, while the St. Louis Rams could make the possible switch since the owner is planning on building a stadium in Inglewood, a few miles down from the Carson project.
There was no reason why the Cardinals would choose to switch conferences, and it does not really point out on how it would benefit them. Still, the switch could be done, since they have not problem having a nice stadium and are settled in the West.
In the end, the hard truth is that the Oakland Raiders are willing to switch if a move is made to Los Angeles. However, this will only happen if they land on the same stadium as the Chargers. The Inglewood project is still up in the air with who is going to house that stadium. Who knows? Maybe some surprise might be reported in the near future.
