The speakeasy trend is becoming more and more prevalent in the dining scene, and NYC could very well be the trailblazer that is taking this taboo existence and making it popular again. Secret restaurants, unmarked entrances, and limited (if any) reservations are common in New York City’s many dining options.
The critically-acclaimed restaurant by celebrity chef Gabrielle Hamilton is not to be left out of this category. By collaborating with American Express for the month of September, Prune is bringing a “secret table” experience to New York City. An ordinary restaurant, with extraordinary food, is creating a fun and interesting way to dine out this month.
Prune is offering its first ever “secret table” to American Express Gold and Premier Rewards Gold Card Members. This “Gold table” is reserved for two people (one being an eligible Gold Card Member) every night that Prune is open to the public for the month of September.
Prune’s limited seating makes it notoriously difficult to obtain a reservation. This Gold Experience makes getting a coveted reservation easier by giving these American Express Members the access to reserve one of two golden tables, and enter the delicious world of Gabrielle Hamilton. Chef Gabrielle Hamilton was nominated for Best Chef NYC in 2009 and 2010 by the James Beard Foundation, and in 2011, she won the category. Her expertise and skill in the kitchen is evident in her dishes. Her ingredient choices are interesting and unexpected, but come together in tantalizing harmony on your palate. You can taste her cultural influences from the seasonings and particular combination of spices… a Greek salad that tastes exactly like Greece, or a spicy eggplant dish with complimenting yogurt sauce that so much resembles Mediterranean cuisine. Add a perfectly cooked halibut or lamb, finished off with fresh made ice cream, and an absurdly satisfying meal is complete.
Also a part of the Gold Experience, if any Gold Card Member presents their eligible card to the host or waitress upon arrival (or before ordering), they will receive a complimentary off-menu dish before their meal. Without revealing too much, this dish is “inspired by Gold” and is a tasty treat that might just push you outside of your food-comfort-zone.
Aside from the extra dishes brought to the table, the status of the Golden customers is kept quiet, adding to the secretive atmosphere of the experience. Reservations are granted on a first come, first serve basis and must be made over the phone, available on Prune’s website. With just a few weeks in September left, and very limited seating in this antique-style restaurant in the East Village, it is highly recommended to make reservations quickly.
Whether you have an American Express Gold Card or not, Prune is a delightful restaurant in New York City that appeases all the varieties of taste buds and leaves you satisfyingly content. A restaurant that has been around since 1999, Prune is a testament to great food, accommodating staff, good location and an uncanny ability to please critical New Yorkers.
