With NXT Takeover Brooklyn in the books, Examiner takes a look at who made the event the biggest one in NXT history and proof that the WWE’s developmental brand is anything but. With an intense card and several memorable moments, even the mid-card battles of Samoa Joe and Baron Corbin were special ones that fans will remember for years.
Thank You, Liger: Although his appearance at NXT Takeover Brooklyn came with Liger at the ripe old age of 50, Liger had a solid match with the NXT’s “Prince of Pretty” Tyler Breeze. While he didn’t go off the top rope at all during the match, the Palm Strike and Running Liger Bomb were enough for him to get the win. Appearing at a Ring of Honor Show earlier this year, Liger has now appeared in at least one match for every relevant North American wrestling company. Add in his bevy of titles in New Japan and there’s no doubt he’s one of the most accomplished junior heavyweights of all time.
Honorable Mention: Tye Dillinger: Listen, Dillinger lost to Apollo Crews at NXT Takeover Brooklyn, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t matter. He made Crews look great and that was his job for the night. At the same time, he looked solid as hell as well. His gimmick is awesome and if he bulks up a bit more, he’ll really be a perfect 10. Simply put, he’s an awesome hand in the ring and someone the brand can use in a variety of different ways.
5: Kevin Owens: In what was probably his last match in NXT, Owens put Finn Balor over big time. With bigger things to accomplish, Owens is prepared to take the WWE main roster down one by one, starting with Cesaro.
4: Apollo Crews: His first match in NXT was a short one, but during that time, Crews showed a brilliant combination of power and speed. Simply put, he’s going to be challenging Finn Balor for the NXT title in no time.
3: The Vaudevillians: Simon Gotch and Aiden English may have needed the help of Blue Pants, but it doesn’t matter. Finally the NXT Tag Team champions, the duo with the best gimmick and the best in-ring chemistry can take the NXT Tag Team division to the next level. With the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Invitational on the way as well, nothing but good things are in the near-future for Gotch and English.
2: Bayley: The John Cena of the NXT Women’s Division finally has the gold. In what will go down as one of the best matches in Divas history, Bayley took down Sasha Banks with a pair of Belly-to-Bayley Suplexes and a variety of strikes and counters. The consulate professional and fantastic role model, expect Bayley to hold onto the title for a long time.
1: Finn Balor: The reigning and defending NXT Champion is in a league of his own after NXT Takeover Brooklyn and a win over Kevin Owens. The only question is, who comes after his title next?
