With a great women’s match between Becky Lynch and Bayley, as well as NXT Champion Finn Balor in action and a surprise win from Tye Dillinger, this week’s episode of NXT had a nice blend of in-ring action and storyline development.
Check out this week’s NXT Power Rankings to see who shined with just a week before NXT Takeover Brooklyn.
Honorable Mention: Tye Dillinger: After a year and change of languishing as a Tag Team performer and a jobber, Dillinger has a new gimmick and it earned him a surprise win over NXT fan-favorite Solomon Crowe. With a nifty new finishing maneuver as well, Dillinger may have more upside than anyone ever thought.
5: Baron Corbin: The NXT universe is getting sick of Corbin’s squashing of the competition, but it’s good to see him getting more mic time. With a match against Samoa Joe in the works as well, Corbin has a rare opportunity to put his money where his mouth is. Although he’s beaten Rhino and pushed Adrian Neville to his limit, Corbin’s potential matchup against Joe is the biggest one of his young career.
4: The Vaudevillians: Simon Gotch and Aiden English say they have a plan for Alexa Bliss and the NXT Tag Team Champions Blake and Murphy for NXT Takeover Brooklyn. Easily the best in-ring duo in NXT, with the best gimmick, this may be the best and last time they have to take those titles.
3: Bayley: For years she’s been a fan favorite in NXT and with Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks all getting the call-up to the main roster, it makes sense that Bayley takes the throne. But make no mistake, nothing was given to her. She’s earned it.
2: Kevin Owens: He’s got nothing left to prove in NXT, but don’t let that fool you. Owens loves extreme matches and expect to see things in Owens’ ladder match against NXT Champion Finn Balor at NXT Takeover Brooklyn that you haven’t seen in a WWE ring. His last hurrah in NXT, Owens will go out with a bang- and even though he won’t leave NXT Takeover Brooklyn with the NXT title, he’ll put Balor over in a way that will solidify the title and his challenger’s reputation.
1: Finn Balor: The reigning and defending NXT Champion is set for a career-altering encounter with Kevin Owens at NXT Takeover Brooklyn. But before that, Balor defeated resident NXT nut job Marcus Louis in relatively short order. Between a ton of fan support in the states and his career in Japan, Balor gives NXT more worldwide credibility than ever before. Although the match with Owens will be a rough one, the road afterwards is one clear- and filled with athletic challengers the likes of Hideo Itami, Tyler Breeze and Sami Zayn, that’ll bring out Balor’s speed and charisma.
