The North Jersey Blast 6th grade team won the championship of the Silver Division of the 2015 Fall youth basketball league in Westwood, NJ. The team was coached by junior KC Toledo from New Milford High School.
In the first round the Blast 6th grade team defeated the North Jersey Blast 5th/6th grade team, 32-10. Kaylie McQuade had 10 points, Lara McLaughlin had 6 points, and Sara Vanderbeck, Julia Angeles, and Kerry Perez all had 4 points a piece.
In the next round the Blast 6th grade defeated the NJ Raptors, 46-24. Meghan Karach had 2 points, Julia Angeles had 3 points, Kaylie McQuade, Sarah Vanderbeck and Kerry Perez each added 4 points. Lara McLaughlin had 8 points, Sophia Firneno had 9 points, and fifth grader Isabella Gilmour had a season-high of 11 points. Gilmour did a great job getting between defenders and shooting off the dribble. She drew fouls and was was three for three from the foul line.
Every player needed to participate in at least five games before play-offs started. The New Jersey Sparks requested to add a new player to their roster for the championship game even though it would cost them the win. Both coaches mutually agreed to play the game regardless. The North Jersey Blast 6th grade team lost to the Sparks, 41-36. The Blast started the game off strong earning the first lead of the game, 10-4. At the half-time they lead 24-17. They maintained the lead until the last 4 minutes of the game when the Sparks earned it back. The Blast had to foul to stop the clock and the lead extended. The MVP of the game went to Sophia Firneno who is great at cutting from the block to the corner and knocking down three-point shots. Before getting injured she had 11 points. Sophia is also a strong defender who can defend both guards and posts. Sarah Vanderbeck did a great job pressuring the ball and earning steals. She had 10 points. Kaylie McQuade has a nice jump shot and can release the ball quickly; she had 9 points. Isabella Gilmour and Kerry Perez added 2 points a piece. They played strong defense on the wing. Lara McLaughlin played great at the point. She got into the middle of the paint and fed the ball to open teammates. Julia Angeles and Meghan Karach did a good job of working the middle of the court during the press breaker. They made smart cuts and distributed the ball.
