The Nihonmachi Street Fair considers itself the original “melting pot” of street fairs, with many aspects of Asian-Pacific American life—and San Francisco’s cultural life—expressed through performance, tradition, art, music, food, and community outreach and service. Over 30,000 festival attendees have made their way to the fair in past years.
Expect Hawaiian and Japanese music & dance, a dog show on August 2nd, car show, a food fair and more.
The Art & Soul of Japantown: Leon Sun
Leon Sun has been an artist /activist in the Asian American Movement since the 1970s. He works in photography, painting, drawing, graphic design, and screenprinting which he learned at JAM Workshop when it was at the original Sutter St location. He was part of “Jtown Arts” and exhibited with other community artists in the show, Jtown Forever. He lives in San Francisco with his wife Karen and their dog, Nikki.
Leon will creating a work of art on site at the Art & Soul of Jtown in the Buchanan Mall on Saturday, August 1st from 11am – 4pm. A wonderful opportunity to see an artist at work and even pick his brains with questions.

Learn more about the elements of art while searching the Asian Art Museum collection with an Elements of Art Explorer Pack. Designed for kids 5 and older, the packs use props and playthings to introduce line, shape, color, and texture to young visitors. You can pick up Elements of Art Explorer Packs at the family activity table in South Court.
The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian Art, with a collection of over 17,000 artworks spanning 6,000 years of history.
Normally $12, the museum offers free admission every first Sunday the month. Please note, special exhibits may require a fee.

SOMAArts “Chocolate and Art Show” takes over SOMArts Cultural Center for two days of live body painting, live music, face-painting, free nail art/henna tattoos, live portraits and free chocolate from 8 pm to 2 am on Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31, 2015.
DJ Rundown and DJ Inglorious Justin will be spinning. Outside they will have five bands each night. They have yet to announce them, but they assure that you are in for a treat.

2015 “Art + Soul” Festival: Saturday in Oakland
Celebrate Oakland’s vibrant art and music scene at the biggest street party of the year, 2015 Art & Soul Festival, in downtown Oakland.
The 15th annual festival features a Saturday performance by aerial dance group Bandaloop, and a Blues & BBQ Blowout on Saturday and Sunday, along with a gospel showcase, art displays, and a giant Family Fun Zone with rides and entertainment for the kids.
