Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be the biggest movie this year no doubt, sorry Jurassic World. Last night during Monday Night Football, the last Force Awakens trailer dropped, leaving fans with their trailer fix until December 18th. Fans were treated to a great trailer, showing off new footage, but still managing to keep us in the dark. After watching it for the 50th time straight, something came to my head, a theory that could be so crazy that it could be true.
**Before I get into why I think what I think, I want to warn you, this could very well be the twist in the movie. Spoilers of some sort could follow, so read at your own discretion.**
Ever since the first trailer dropped, fans started theorizing who is this new bad guy Kylo Ren? Why does he have a new unconventional lightsaber? Is he actually bad? Many theories have caught my eye, for example, the one that Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) are part of the Solo family. This was an interesting one, but due to the fact that Disney dismissed the Extended Universe, I don’t think this would be true. Another interesting one out there is that Kylo Ren is the grandson of the Emperor. He has come to age and is now obsessed with Darth Vader and wants to finish what he started. As interesting that sounds, it doesn’t connect with me.
Only till’ last night did this hit me, who is Kylo Ren you ask? I believe its…. Luke Skywalker. Before you run to the comments to bash this article for being totally ridiculous, read my reasons on why I think this is to be true and perhaps you will end up thinking the same.
First reason: Ever since the first trailer released, Luke Skywalker has been missing. He is said to be in “hiding”, but we’ll go into that a little later. Since then he hasn’t been in anything Star Wars related; no new poster, no trailer, and no new toys. Oh, but on the contrary, he is. If you were to imagine Luke in all the places Kylo are in, it makes sense, Luke has been present this whole time and he’s been right under our nose.
The Kylo Ren helmet, that is now available for purchase, says an interesting thing that furthered my beliefs in this Luke/Kylo theory. From the previous teaser that released way back in August, it shows off Finn wielding a blue lightsaber. This is said to be Anakin’s lightsaber which we know that then was passed down to Luke. The Kylo Ren helmet states: “That weapon is mine!”.
Many theorists are stating that Kylo Ren is obsessed with Darth Vader, but once you start thinking that it’s Luke under that mask, that statement is a lot more meaningful. Why would an obsessed Vader fanboy think that weapon is his? Just because you’re crazed about the guy doesn’t entitle you to the weapon, but if Luke were to say that, it would make a whole lot of sense.
Second reason: This next hint comes from both J.J. Abrams himself and the new trailer. First off, the trailer shows more footage of Kylo Ren and some dialogue. Kylo states in a very menacing voice synthesizer, ”Nothing will we stand in our way, I will finish what you started” During this little monolog, a shot of Darth Vader’s helmet shows up, hinting at what Kylo meant by saying I will finish what you started.
In the original trilogy, Luke was offered to join the dark side plenty of times. Vader even extended his hand to Luke offering him to rule the galaxy as Father and Son. Perhaps after the death of Vader, Luke regretted that he couldn’t save his father, which ultimately makes him go into “hiding”. He knew there was still good in him, heck he even showed a little of it by saving Luke from the Emperors’ hand.
Maybe after years of solitude, Luke decided to finish what his father started, but in the way that is “right” this time. The reason J.J. Abrams added to my theory was his statement he made with Entertainment Weekly: “I think that there are two sides to the Force. Both sides, arguably, would see themselves as the hero of their story, and I think that applies here.”
This could be the part of the movie’s twist that shows what Luke Skywalker is doing isn’t necessarily bad, but rather wrong in the large landscape of things. Maybe Luke wanted to rule the galaxy like his father intended to, but the dark-side engulfed him too quickly which makes him act like a villain.
It has been rumored for a long time that whoever Kylo Ren is, he isn’t the bad guy. Abrams said in an interview with Empire: “Kylo Ren is not a Sith”. If he’s not a Sith does that make him not a bad guy? He sure looks like a bad guy though with all the stormtroopers surrounding him. The odds are he is the main antagonist, but where is motives stand are still to be seen.
Reason 3: I believe Adam Driver is just doing the acting for Kylo Ren, once the reveal comes, Mark Hamill will be under the mask. This isn’t crazy to believe, back in the original trilogy, the actor who played as Darth Vader did not voice him, this could be the same for Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker.
So once you get in your head that Driver won’t be anything more than a portrayal of Kylo’s body, it starts to make sense. Plus Mark Hamill is probably too old to start having a lightsaber duel with Finn anyway.
There are a lot of gapped pieces in my theory I know, but when the facts are right in front of you, it makes it a little easier to believe. This could very well be the twist in The Force Awakens, having Luke become evil, but thinking he’s doing the right thing will make for a very interesting plot that will have fans of the franchise and newcomers alike be left in awe. I obviously don’t have all the answers on how or when Luke decided to turn to the dark side, but it makes sense from a certain perspective.
Then again all this could mean nothing, maybe Kylo Ren is someone else and our beloved hero must be found to take him out. Either way the hype around Star Wars is real, December 18th can’t come quick enough.
