This week brings a slew of Netflix original series, starting August 7 with the debut of two new shows, starting with the Spanish-language comedy “Club de Cuervos.” “Club de Cuervos” centers around a brother and sister who inherit a soccer team. The original debuts continue with the tween-focused “Project Mc2.,” centered around four smart girls who use their wits to solve cases. Geared for audiences age 7 to 12, “Project Mc2” hopes to inspire young girls to learn more about math, science and the world. Danica McKellar, known as Winnie on “The Wonder Years,” heads up the cast.
The most anticipated debut of the week may be season 8 of the newest iteration of “Doctor Who,” with Peter Capaldi (“In the Loop,” “The Thick of It”) putting his own spin on things as the doctor’s newest regeneration. Season 8 of “Doctor Who” arrives on August 8.
August 11 brings “Two Days, One Night,” the newest film from acclaimed filmmakers the Dardenne brothers. For the first time, the Dardennes have a cost a movie star in the lead role, with Marion Cotillard portraying a woman begging co-workers to save her from being dismissed from her job. The result is another masterwork from the Belgian duo.
The wave of Netflix original series debuts reaches its zenith on August 14, when three originals premiere, starting with the newest stand-up special from Demetri Martin, “Demetri Martin: Live (At the Time),” a showcase for Martin’s knack for surreal wordplay, right down to the special’s title. The other Netflix originals are geared towards a younger audience: “DinoTrux,” an animated series from Dreamworks, and the third season of “Ever After High: Way too Wonderland,” based on the popular dolls.
