Many people will be grilling outdoors all the way through fall and up until it snows. It’s a great activity to bring friends together as the cooking often takes center stage.
Remember to attend to safety details. According to NBC News, just recently a young woman in Ohio looked outside and saw five-foot flames shooting up from the gas grill outside. Julie Hill, 33, watched as the whole thing was engulfed in fire. She said, “The knobs melted off, the shelf melted off.” A fire extinguisher was emptied on the blaze. One important thing she learned from the 9-1-1 dispatch agent was to wait until the fire died back to shut off the propane.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 18,000 grill-related emergency room visits last year. In some instances clothing caught fire. If you are new to grilling outdoors and need some pre-preparation ideas to bank on, here are some suggestions:
- place your away from the house and never use inside a garage
- the area where the grill sits should be level
- place a fire-space material or metal plate under the unit
- don’t ignite grill with the hood closed
- if it’s windy, move inside instead
- adding fire-starting fluid to hot coals is a no-no
- in addition, don’t use leftover wood from a DIY project or chemically-treated wood

We recently tested an electric grill made by the George Foreman group. George Foreman Grill products were the first company to think about draining grease off of hamburgers for healthier living. We like them for many reasons but sturdiness, ease of use, and utility of purpose are the main pluses.
Over the Fourth of July we test-drove a new model, an indoor-outdoor grill for 15 servings (GFO240). After assembly we put it out on the deck because this one has a pedestal base and stand. Under the dome lid is a solid grill nonstick surface. We grilled filet mignon that were aided by a meat rub (and they had been left in the fridge to set up).
The grill is easy to operate and made the steak in a jiffy. My brother did the cooking and our pieces turned out great, (my husband’s mooing rare was a little too well done but we didn’t reprimand the guest’s cooking!). In any event, we enjoyed the meal immensely. Good company, good food, good wine—followed by prayer, talk, and appreciation for each other.
Now this particular model can also be used without the pedestal and placed on a countertop for inside service. No matter where you keep it, clean up is easy. This unit makes it simple to grill veggies too, because there is no way for them to fall into flames or get lost or stuck on a wire grill, so if you want your asparagus grilled this summer, check it out.
