In order to find yourself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records requires a tremendous amount of discipline, a razor sharp focus on your intended goal and lastly you pretty much have to believe you can break even the laws of nature, physics and what had heretofore been considered impossible. But there are people, individuals and groups who work at forward thinking corporations like Volkswagen of America and Goodyear Tires who believe in giving those with the vision, the dream, the knowledge and the stubbornness to achieve almost anything.
Consider the odds that were against legendary automotive journalist, fuel efficiency expert and owner of MPG.com Mr. Warne Gerdes who spent 80 hours mapping out his route and put 4,000 pre-test miles on a set of Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max Tires on both a 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen TDI as well as a four door 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI. For 2015 The Golf TDI hatchback and wagon were redesigned with the engine receiving a thorough re-think that noticeably improved refinement and responsiveness despite boasting an only slightly elevated 150 horsepower/236 lb. feet of torque power reading as compared to the last iteration of VW’s 2.0 liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder the year before.
But even a simpleton, judging by the record set by Mr. Gerdes and his navigator/co-driver Bob Winger, can see fuel efficiency has improved as the duo averaged 81.17 miles per gallon during a recent 48 state Guinness Book of World Records fuel economy record setting drive that ended at VW headquarters in Herndon, Virginia. The duo wound up spending less than $300 on fuel yet still was able to travel 8,233 miles. This new record beats the previous fuel economy record set by a hybrid vehicle by over 6 miles per gallon.
If you are interested in perhaps improving your own fuel economy, the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tire line is available in 60 sizes and can save a driver up to 2,600 miles of gas over the life of these low profile tires. According to Mr. Gerdes, “In my experience, the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max has some of the best wet weather traction of any fuel efficient tire. It’s why I’ve chosen them for all my personal vehicles.”
Anyone who has ever owned a Volkswagen model with the 2.0 liter TDI engine can tell you how fuel efficient these engines are especially on the highway. We just didn’t know quite how efficient they were until now. Currently the TDI motor is available with the Jetta, Passat, Golf, Golf Sportwagen and Beetle.
