With so many failed attempts to produce a well written biopic that actually depicts the real story of our favorite solo artists and music groups – one can only hope that this time around, with the biopic of legendary R&B group New Edition underway, that BET Networks gets it right. On the 47th birthday of original New Edition member Michael Bivens, the news of the New Edition Biopic Miniseries in collaboration with New Edition Enterprises was released. Talk Your Ish Blog reported on Monday Aug. 10 about the release of a flyer, from original New Edition member Ron Devoe’s Twitter page, which broke the news.
The flyer included this quote, “It’s been a long time coming and that time is finally here!”as posted on the flyer simultaneously released to Devoe’s Twitter and Instagram account. “Now that we have signed the deal, New Edition’s journey will be captured in a three night mini-series to tell our story through our own very eyes.” No word on an upcoming air date as of yet but the informal press release provided a little spoiler by giving details of what this three part mini-series will cover and New Edition fans won’t want to miss.
“From our beginning in the Orchard Park Projects in Boston to Hollywood and everything in between,” will be covered in the biopic according to the announcement. Just like the Temptations and the Jackson Five, we are ready to retrace our footsteps and show everyone how we got here.” In addition to New Edition Enterprises and BET Networks, the production of the mini-series will also include Jesse Collins Entertainment, whose credits include shows like BET’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood” “Young Jeezy: A Hustler’s Ambition” and several BET specials. The biopic will also include hands on involvement from BET Chairman and CEO Debra Lee and BET executive, Stephen Hill.
With so many biopics gone wrong BET must have the recipe to get it right. Especially since the network released a list of biopics over the years that according to site represented “Celebrity biopics that got it right” and accurately depicted the stories of so many legends. Included in the list of thirteen biopics were the stories of Ike and Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to do With It” the ’93 film that told their story of music, love and abuse; “Selena” (the Selena Gomez biopic), and The Temptations.
Hopefully BET picked up on some relevant ideas and tips from these successful films to be able to deliver a great production. For more updates follow Big Ron Devoe on Twitter. And happy birthday Michael Bivens.
