While the return of summer to Atlanta often brings the sound of kids squealing at the neighborhood pool and the smell of freshly mowed grass blended with something heavenly being grilled over charcoal, it also brings droves of guests to two popular amusement parks: Six Flags Over Georgia and LanierWorld at Lanier Islands. While long-time fans can expect to find all of their favorite rides and slides at both venues, they will be pleasantly surprised to experience a pair of new thrill-packing attractions at each of these parks.
LanierWorld at Lanier Islands: Kicking off its 28th season on the southern shores of Lake Sidney Lanier, this wildly popular beach, boardwalk and waterpark venue will debut its first major slide since the introduction of the Fun Dunker Drop 17 years ago. And – as if that wasn’t enough – the park will also launch an exciting new zipline experience. According to a recent press release from Lanier Islands:
- CAT 4: While a Category 4 hurricane boasts wind speeds of up to 155 mph, riders will only feel as though they are traveling at a similar rate of speed as they race down one of four lanes of this dry slide on a hard-bottomed tube. The adventure begins high on a hill, as CAT 4 sends guests flying out over the heads of unsuspecting passerby on the boardwalk below, bounding out across the beach, and splashing down directly into the cool waters of the lake.
- Thunderbolt: Inspired by the wild popularity of Lake Lanier Islands Canopy Tours mixed with a little bit of that daredevil spirit from the imaginative LanierWorld team, Thunderbolt is an electrifying new zipline experience that boasts not just one or two, but three parallel racing ziplines. Riders are strapped into specially crafted safety harnesses before they begin their rapid descent through the forest, over the boardwalk, across the beach and – for what is undoubtedly the most delightful (and daring) parts of this ride – high above the sparkling waters of Sunset Cove before touching down on the opposite shore.
LanierWorld has also tripled the size of its Wibit Aquatic Obstacle Course for three times the fun. The addition of an ultra bright high-definition big screen at the end of LanierWorld’s Wild Waves wave pool will add to the entertainment factor of one of the park’s most loved attractions. Visit www.lanierislands.com regularly for a listing of Dive-In Movies that will play on the big screen, as well as a calendar of events that boasts live entertainment and special promotions. While there, be sure to check out descriptions of all of the other waterslides, carnival rides, restaurants, and more. LanierWorld opens for the 2015 season on Saturday, May 9.
Six Flags Over Georgia: After the massive 2014 debuts of Hurricane Harbor and Holiday in the Park, you might think Six Flags Over Georgia would rest on its laurels for awhile before pulling anything new out of its bag of tricks for 2015. SURPRISE! Six Flags ups the fun factor with the addition of two new rides to the park’s Gotham City district. Outlined in a press release from the park:
“We are excited to introduce two new high-thrill attractions to our collection of world-class coasters at the park,” said Six Flags Atlanta Properties park president Dale Kaetzel. “Gotham City is one of the park’s most iconic and popular areas and this multi-million dollar expansion will help create a day full of fun and exciting memories for all of our thrill seekers and their families.”
- THE JOKER Chaos Coaster: Marking Six Flags Over Georgia’s 12th coaster, THE JOKER Chaos Coaster boasts a unique seating pattern that places riders in a “face-off” against each other as the train rockets seven stories high. The ride features glide, both forward and backward, through a bedlam of loops, as well as a suspended upside down roll, 72 feet in the air, for a ravaging thrill.
- Harley Quinn Spinsanity: This new ride will send riders spinning, twisting and rolling through a cycle of classic amusement park fun.
Both rides are set to open in May 2015 – which also marks the return of Hurricane Harbor on May 22. To learn more about these new rides and other attractions at Six Flags Over Georgia, visit www.sixflags.com/overgeorgia.
