Nelson Mandela’s grandson is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at a bar in Johannesburg. The 24-year-old grandson of the late Mandela is being held by police and is due for a bail hearing in court on Friday. He was briefly in court on Monday, where he was charged with rape.
According to The Toronto Sun on August 19, the girl reported that the rape occurred on August 7, but didn’t report this to the police until August 14, 2015. Police have opened an investigation into the allegations while they hold Mbuso Mandela in jail.
Police are adamant that Mbuso will be treated the same as any citizen who is accused of this crime, despite being the grandson of the late anti-apartheid leader. The girl accused Mbuso of following her into the bathroom and raping her inside a stall at a popular bar.
The girl, who is undergoing counseling over this alleged incident, made her report to the police last weekend, which is when Mbuso was taken into custody and arrested. The girl’s accusations are somewhat contradicted by what the owner of the Mammas Shebeen Bar had to say. This is the establishment where the incident allegedly occurred.
He said he was unaware of any problems in the establishment the night that the unidentified girl reported she was raped and the same goes for the staff working there. They didn’t hear about any problems on the night in question. The owner, Yaw Dwomoh, said they would be more than happy to cooperate with the police, but no one from law enforcement has stopped by to question the owner or the staff.
He said they have 20 cameras throughout the establishment, which could have been of some help to their investigation. Since the cameras only hold the last 120 hours of surveillance, any events that happened that night are already taped over.
According to News Max, it is reported that “Mbuso Mandela’s famous grandmother, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, allegedly tried to intercede in the investigation,” which is what a spokesperson for the girl’s family is saying.” The spokesperson said that “Madikizela-Mandela first asked the girl’s father to hold off on filing charges while her family had time to deal with the issue.”
“Instead, Winnie’s bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop,” the spokesperson told the media. “The father was told there was no need to arrest the suspect but when the father asked to see his badge, he didn’t have one. It turned out he had been sent by Winnie.”
It is reported by the spokesperson that the girl’s family was angered by this attempt at intervening in this investigation. The spokesperson said, “Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime. Children can’t just be raped and then everything is alright. The girl is young and doesn’t even drink.”
