According to Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives for the Charleston Police Department, a woman known only as “Heather” is a hero, having slayed a possible serial killer. Though at present time, no victims have been officially linked to Neal Falls, investigators in 9 states are working to determine if he could be responsible for a large number of missing women across the country.
On July 18, Heather answered the door, expecting a man she had arranged a “date” with through Backpage.com. Little did she know, she was inviting in a monster. Though the exact sequence of events is not certain, reports say that Falls displayed a gun as soon as the door was opened, pressing it to her chest, and saying “Live or die?” He then began beating and choking her, eventually setting the gun down to wrestle away a rake his victim had grabbed to defend herself. This is when she grabbed the gun and shot her attacker in the head, over her shoulder.
In his vehicle, police found a “kill kit,” which included several pairs of handcuffs, various long knives, a box cutter, two axes, a machete, a sledgehammer, a bulletproof vest, another gun, shovels, a rubber tub (large enough to hold an adult,) and bleach, with other cleaning supplies that could be used to dispose of a body. In his pocket, a list of 6 other believed sex workers in the area.
At this point, not alot is known about Neal Falls, where he has been, or what he has done. He rented a room in Henderson, NV from 2000 to 2008, during the time when Misty Saens, Jodi Brewer, Lindsay Harris, and Jessie Foster disappeared from Las Vegas. During this time, he worked as a security guard at the Hoover Dam. His roommate says he was never a problem, he paid his rent on time and mostly kept to himself. A landlord from Eugene, OR has also come forward, saying she rented a room to him for nearly a year in 2010. She found him odd and creepy. It has also been said that he once worked as a security guard at Niagara Falls. Since the death of his mother in January, he had been travelling across the country, having been pulled over for speeding near Fort Worth, TX roughly 10 days before his death.
The Daily Beast somehow got ahold of a phone number associated with Falls early Thursday morning, which led to a Facebook page for a BJ Ross, who also has reports on exposingjohns.com and flushthejohns.org for soliciting prostitutes. The Facebook page does not show any public updates in 2015 and doesn’t really give much insight into the mind of it’s creator, though one post from February 23, 2014, seems to express a disdain for “sluts.”
Despite all the damning evidence found in Neal Falls’ possession, a longtime friend finds all this hard to swallow. This friend, who requested anonymity, spoke of Falls’ life, saying that it was not good, he was the youngest of 10 children, and his father was extremely abusive, beating their mother in front of them. This friend says that Falls was a good guy, calm, and normal. And yet, all this information to the contrary is starting to stack up.
“Heather” said she could tell that he had done this same thing before, based partially on him being confident in what he was saying and doing. She was lucky to escape with her life, as it seems several others before her may have not. The full extent of Neal Falls’ crimes may never be know, but because of this girl, he will never have the chance to do it again.
