It’s summer in the city and it’s getting hot in here. The boat cruises are running every weekend, to cool you off, with multiple bands on board. The music festivals are becoming a weekend thing, as they seem to pop up all over the place. Here’s some of Examiner’s weekend suggestions for you.
Hingham Harbor, a beautiful spot on the water, has a FREE concert with Danny Klein of the J. Geils Band on Friday, July 24. Danny Klein’s Full House Band features the music from the J. Geils catalog. The event will be at: 18 Shipyard Drive in Hingham and the show starts at 7 p.m. Get there early because there are many shops to explore and some wonderful restaurants as well. The Walhburg’s restaurant, Alma Nova, overlooks the band stand. You can eat your dinner and watch the show. Who knows, you may bump in to Mark Walburg or any one of his brothers. That busy country band, Thirty 6 Red, will be at the Plainridge Park Casino, 301 Washington Street in Plainridge on Friday, July 24. Wear your cowboy boots and know your fancy foot work to keep up with the line dancing tunes this band plays. Dual lead vocalists, Erin Ollis and Larry Smith, have fun with the audience when they start throwing out prizes to the audience. You never know what you’re going to catch. On Saturday, July 25, it’s the Plymouth Funk Music Festival at Plymouth Memorial Hall, 83 Court Street in Plymouth. The festival starts at 5 p.m. with DJ Loring as your host. Also, Chef Ray Alongi, seen on Hells Kitchen, will be serving BBQ from 5 – 8 p.m. The BBQ is gonna be real good from Alongi. Shoot, Hell’s Kitchen featured this man and his grub!
Starting the music for the festival is Otter, a Boston based band, at 5:30 p.m., followed by The Cornerstone at 6:20 p.m., a new funky reggae band from Boston. At 7:20 p.m. it’s Richie Rich and the 24 Karat Funk, at 8:20 p.m. 3rd Left, 9:20 p.m. Thaddeus Hogarth, and 10:15 – 11:30 p.m. it’s Johnny Drama and His Funky Entourage. For tickets: (800)838-3006
A Boston Harbor music cruise is a great time and the perfect place to see a band play. The Provincetown II will leave Boston Harbor from 200 Seaport Blvd on Saturday, July 25 at 1 p.m. for the 8th Annual Harbor Cruise for Over 6 and Diezel Band. This year, they are on a larger boat! Over 6 is a Boston based cover band who play the top dance and rock cover tunes to keep you out on the dance floor. Diezel is a four piece cover band who play it all. The Onset Music Festival begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at the Lillian Gregerman Bandshell in Onset. The music will go all day starting with Carlin Tripp, Angry Ginger, The Whiskey Boys, Brian Sances Band, Huxster and, singer song writer, Grace Morrison, who is the host of the event. Morrison’s music was featured on the finale of American Idol, and she is the voice of Cardi’s Furniture 2014 holiday campaign.
Ben Knight, a rock and roll pianist whose latest release is, Any Strand of Hope, will be performing at Olympia’s Zorba Music Hall, 439 Market Street in Lowell on Saturday, July 25. Examiner caught Knight when he performed at the 2015 New England Music Awards. His performance was high energy and very entertaining. Also joining Knight, is Hunter Stamas, a singer, lyricist and guitarist who plays a combination of folk, rock and pop.
