Munchery was late to the dinner party, with several other food delivery services starting up in Los Angeles in the past year, but already this convenient and delicious new option for chef-prepared meals delivered to your door has proven itself a front runner.
The service kicked off in LA mid-May with a soft launch to local foodie influencers, in which they got their logistics down tight before letting the general public order. The result is a tight operation with excellent services and above all outstanding food.
Customers can order from Munchery’s website or iOS or Android app and schedule on-demand delivery to arrive in about 30 minutes, or next-day or later-that-day delivery at a convenient time. A text notifies customers when their meal is about to arrive.
The menu changes daily and offers an affordable variety of main dishes ($8-$12), sides and salads ($8-10), desserts and drinks ($2-$7), and healthy kids’ meals featuring a main dish and side (starting at $6). Unlike some of the other meal or food box deliveries, there’s no order minimum or subscription commitment.
Meals are made with fresh high-quality and seasonal ingredients, and the menu caters to most dietary needs such as vegan and gluten-free.
The meals are delivered fully cooked and chilled and packaged with easy preparation and heating instructions, and sauces, garnishes and extra seasonings are on the side so that they can be added to suit tastes.
The service, co-founded by Tri Tran and Conrad Chu and backed by celebrity investors including Roy Choi, Jon Favreau, Jared Leto, and Edward Norton, has already been serving San Francisco, Seattle, and New York, with the aim to bridge the gap between restaurant cuisine and home cooking.
“Answering ‘What’s for dinner?’ is hard!” says Tran. “Munchery is our way of making it easier for people like us—people with busy schedules, adventurous palates, and household budgets.”
Local chefs from top restaurants including Patina, Blue Plate Oysterette, and Hatfield’s prepare meals at the local Munchery kitchen.
Featured dishes include Char-Grilled Atlantic Salmon with horseradish crushed potatoes, and asparagus and Chicken Coconut Rice with steamed broccoli and shiitake mushrooms, more refined choices such as Spring Pea Lasagnette, and international favorites like Posole Roja and Thai Shrimp Mango Salad. Kids’ meals include options such as Turkey Tenders and Baked Beef Empanadas.
For families with many tastes and preferences, each member can choose their own meal and still eat dinner together.
Before you worry about all this packaging and driving around and the impact on the environment, you can feel good about your meal knowing that Munchery employs conscientious business practices to minimize its carbon footprint. Delivery trays are made from biodegradable and compostable bamboo and sugar cane fibers, and bags are made of 100% recycled paper. Munchery also offsets the impact of every delivery by planting trees through The Conservation Fund. Additionally, Munchery uses a “one-for-one” social impact model whereby the services helps to feed an Angeleno in need with every order through a partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
Munchery delivers from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Initially, Munchery will be available in Westside neighborhoods and will expand to other areas by the end of summer, with the promise of expanded hours and more services coming soon.
