Producers Berry Gordy, Kevin McCollum, and Doug Morris, and Broadway at the National announced the cast for the Washington premiere of Motown The Musical on Wednesday. The show will play at the National Theatre from December 1, 2015 to January 3, 2016. Featuring over 40 classic hits including ‘My Girl’ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’ Motown The Musical tells the story behind the hits.
Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, resident playwright at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, Motown The Musical is a Broadway record-breaking smash hit featuring the story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to music mogul. Gordy launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and many more. The entire Motown family had to fight hard and against the odds to create their soundtrack in America.
Josh Tower and Allison Semmes have landed the leading roles of Berry Gordy and Diana Ross. Jesse Nager will portray groundbreaking Motown artist Smokey Robinson and Jarran Muse will play Marvin Gaye. Nathaniel Cullors and Leon Outlaw, Jr. will play the roles of young stars Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder as well as Gordy’s boyhood counterpart.
Motown The Musical also features the talents of Erick Buckley, Chante Carmel, Chadaè, J. Daughtry, Stephen Cerf, Anissa Felix, Ashley Tamar Davis, Lynorris Evans, Talya Groves, Dana Marie Ingraham, Rod Harrelson, Robert Hartwell, Rodney Earl Jackson, Jr., Elijah Ahmad Lewis, Krisha Marcano, Jarvis B. Manning, Jr., Moeisha McGill, Marq Moss, Rashad Naylor, Ramone Owens, Doug Storm, Olivia Puckett, Nicholas Ryan, Jamison Scott, Joey Stone, Martina Sykes, Galen J. Williams and Nik Walker.

Choreographed by Patricia Wilcox, from A Night with Janis Joplin, and Warren Adams from Toy Story, Motown The Musical features scenic design by David Korins, who worked on Bring It On: The Musical and Annie. Costume designs are the creations of Tony Award® nominee ESosa, of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and Project Runway. The lighting design is by Tony Award® winner Natasha Katz, from Once and Sister Act, sound design is by Tony Award® nominee Peter Hylenski, from Rock of Ages, and The Scottsboro Boys, projection design is by Daniel Brodie who worked on Jekyll and Hyde, and hair and wig design is by Charles LaPointe of Memphis fame. Casting for Motown The Musical was done by Telsey & Company.
Motown The Musical’s arrangements and orchestrations are by Grammy and Tony Award® nominee Ethan Popp of Rock of Ages. He also serves as the music supervisor for reproducing the classic ‘Sound of Young America,’ with co-orchestrations and additional arrangements by Tony Award® nominee Bryan Crook from Smash and dance arrangements by Zane Mark of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
