A mother is charged in the death of her newborn after she threw the baby girl out a seventh floor window of an apartment building in the Bronx. The baby still had the umbilical cord attached and was alive when she was tossed out that window on Monday.
It is not known why Jennifer Berry ended the life of her newborn child. Ironically this 33-year-old mother now facing the charges in the death of her baby was once a Child Protective Specialist with the Administration for Children, according to WPIX News on September 29.
The baby was found in the courtyard below the apartment building that is located on West 183rd St. at about 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The little newborn girl was pronounced dead on the scene. ‘
The wife of the superintendent of the apartment building was cleaning the alleyway outside when she happened upon the unthinkable in the courtyard of the building. There was newborn baby unresponsive and she still had her umbilical cord attached. This is when the police were called in.
Berry’s home is listed as Gailmore Drive in Yonkers. According to The New York Times, Berry’s boyfriend lives in that seventh story apartment where this mother ended her baby’s life by throwing her out the window. Berry was charged with second degree murder and manslaughter on Tuesday in court. Berry is ordered to stay in jail until her next court date on Oct. 5.
The baby died from “multiple blunt force injuries,” according to New York Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson. These injuries would be consistent with a baby falling from that height, according to the Time’s report.
Berry worked as a child protective specialist back in 2007. She was with the Administration for Children’s Services for only about six months and during that time it is reported that she had limited contact with the families. She had been in training for the first three months and it is not known why she left that position.
According to The New York Times, “Ms. Berry, a police official said, apparently hid the final stage of her pregnancy from relatives and friends, including, it appears, her boyfriend. She told some of them that she had miscarried weeks ago. On Monday, she initially denied giving birth to the child but ultimately relented and admitted that she had delivered the baby, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details of the investigation.”
