Morgan Freeman’s step-granddaughter, E’Dena Hines, was found stabbed to death on a New York City street early Sunday morning. The boyfriend of the 33-year-old actress is being held for a psychological evaluation after he was found kneeling over her body at the scene.
According to CNN News on August 17, Morgan Freeman, who always referred to Hines as his “granddaughter,” released a statement about the horrific and senseless killing of the young woman. Hines was the biological granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw. He was married to Bradshaw for 12 years before divorcing in 1979.
Police answered a 911 call shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday in the Washington Heights section of New York City. They found Hines lying in the street and stabbed multiple times in her upper body. Her boyfriend, Lamar Davenport, 30, was at the scene and he has been charged with murder and is undergoing a psych evaluation at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Hines was transported to Harlem Hospital where she was pronounced dead. According to Gossip Cop via MSN News, there’s no motive given for the stabbing death of Hines.
Davenport was reportedly acting very disturbed as a witness to the killing described his bizarre actions while attacking the young woman. From the description of his behaviors and from what the witness heard him say while stabbing the victim, it sounds as if Davenport was making a “disturbed attempt at an exorcism,” according Fox News.
George Hudacko witnessed Hines’ murder from his third-floor apartment, He was the witness who called 911 and “begged them to come.” He said that Davenport screamed “Get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out!” as he attacked Hines.
Fox reports that “police officers had to physically restrain Davenport from continuing his attack and further brutalizing Hines’ lifeless body.” A police source reports that he “was still making a stabbing motion with his arm, but he had nothing in his fist — the knife was jutting out of her chest.” Davenport is an aspiring rapper, who uses the name Lyric when performing.
Freeman released a statement, which includes, “The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.” He also said, “Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”
Hines’ dream of landing a part in a movie had just been fulfilled. She had recently been given a role in an independent film, which she appeared ecstatic about. The evidence of her happiness is seen across her social media posts. One of Hines posts from back in July talked about this movie role she had just been awarded:
“My dream has come true and its just beginning,” she wrote. “Life can make you want to give up or walk away; sometimes it gives you the strength to appreciate when you do get your happy ending.” Sadly, life did not have a happy ending for Hines, but from all accounts she had a wonderful life, however short, that was filled with people who loved her very much, including her grandfather, Morgan Freeman.
