The Cleveland Browns were able to dodge the rain drops for day ten of training camp in Berea on Monday morning, but they can’t seem to dodge the injury bug. Two key members of the offense were dinged up late in practice, left tackle Joe Thomas and wide receiver Brian Hartline.
Thomas got rolled up on by first round pick Danny Shelton during eleven on eleven drills. Shelton got blocked into Thomas from behind by center Alex Mack. The all pro left tackle was checked out by the teams medical staff on the sidelines before walking back to the locker room under his own power. Thomas and head coach Mike Pettine believe the injury isn’t serious.
“Yeah, We will know more [soon]” Pettine said. “I don’t think it is anything serious.”
Thomas will get the leg examined as a precaution. It’s too early to tell if Thomas will play in Thursday’s preseason opener at FirstEnergy Stadium against the Washington Redskins. The starters are only expected to see a few plays anyways so it won’t be a surprise if the coaching staff holds Thomas out of the game.
If Thomas is going to miss anytime there is a couple of options as a replacement for the franchise left tackle.
“Cam Erving is a guy that would have to take some work there, as well,” Pettine said. “Michael Bowie can slide over as you mentioned. That is something we need to talk about just depending on if there is any time missed.”
“Joe is fine. Joe’s got a great track record,” Erving said. “He hasn’t missed a game, he hasn’t missed a snap since he’s been in the league. Somebody like that I don’t worry about. I just take extra precaution because he’s such a great player and such a durable guy”
Thomas has not missed a regular season game in his entire eight year career with the Browns.
As for the Canton native Hartline, his injury happened on the final play of practice. Hartline and Tramon Williams both jumped up to catch a deep pass down the sideline. Hartline got landed on by Williams and Hartline would limp over to the sidelines. Hartline would head back to the locker room at the end of practice and appeared to be fine.
Pettine ended practice early because of the injuries suffered by Thomas and Hartline.
Notable players to miss practice on Monday include wide receivers Dwayne Bowe and Terrelle Pryor, running backs Duke Johnson and Shaun Draughn, linebacker Barkevious Mingo and defensive lineman Billy Winn. Johnson has already been ruled out for Thursday’s opener with a hamstring injury.
The Browns made one more change to the roster on Monday with the signing of linebacker Moise Fokou and the release of wide receiver Rodney Smith. Fokou is a seven year NFL veteran who has spent time with the Eagles, Colts, Titans and Saints. He played in two games with New Orleans last season. Smith appeared in three games for the Browns in 2014.
Tuesday is the final open training camp practice before Thursday’s preseason opener. Practice goes from 9:30 a.m until 12:00 p.m. 3,437 fans took in day ten of training camp on Monday.
