In Colorado, the spirits industry is bursting with life as countless distillers have opened their doors across the thirsty lands of the Rocky Mountain state. Among the various distillers operating in Colorado is Montanya Distillers, which is located up in Crested Butte.
The distillery has been around since 2008 and has quickly earned the reputation for crafting some of the most delicious rum in the state. Only a short walk away from the ski slopes, Montanya Distillers has created some excellent rums and for those who wish to mix-up their rum with other ingredients, allow us to introduce you to Elevated Cocktails.
Montanya decided to put out a book that highlights some of the best recipes for pairing Montanya Rums with other cocktail ingredients. The two cocktails we’ll talk about today are Montanya’s Mountain Daiquiri and the Rum Old Fashioned, both of which provide different perspectives on Montanya and are from the book itself.
Starting off, in order to create a Montanya Mountain Daiquiri, you’ll need to have on hand Montanya Platino Rum, Montanya Oro Rum, fresh lime, simple syrup, a shaker, ice, rocks glass, strainer, lime wheel, salt and sugar. The process is fairly simple, though make sure your measurements are precise.
First, add ice into your shaker, and then squeeze in one half of a fresh lime. Pour into the two ounces of Montanya Platino Rum, one ounce of Montanya Oro Rum and one half of an ounce of simple syrup. Once you have done this, shake up the contents thoroughly until you are happy with its consistency.
Finally, strain the contents into your rocks glass, which should have ice already placed in it, plus the glass should be rimmed half with sugar and half with salt. If you’d like to garnish the drink, a lime wheel works great. This cocktail is particularly refreshing and presents the two sorts of rum in an interesting fashion.
Moving onto the Rum Old Fashioned, you will need to have on hand a rocks glass, an orange slice, amarena, sugar simple sugar, a muddler, Montanya Oro Rum, citrus bitters, a king ice cube and bar spoon. This beverage is a bit more involved, so you’ll need to be careful as you progress through creating it.
First, you’ll need to muddle a single orange slice, a pinch of sugar and one amarena at the bottom of your rocks glass. Once you have done this, then you’ll need to add in one fourth of an ounce of simple syrup, three ounces of Montanya Oro Rum, five drops of citrus bitters and a single king ice cube.
Do not shake the contents up, as you’ll instead need to stir them up with a bar spoon until they are chilled. Lastly, if you feel like the drink needs a garnish, go ahead and add another amarena. This particular cocktail is more flavorful and the same can be said for the level of tang.
