Monica Lewinsky posted an anti-bullying video, where she revealed she used laughter to heal after years of bullying and fat-shaming following her affair with former president Bill Clinton. Interestingly, Lewinsky decided to return to the public eye in the middle of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Monica was publicly humiliated, fat-shamed and mercilessly mocked after her affair with Bill Clinton was made public in 1998. Lewinsky, who’s most famous for giving oral sex to Clinton multiple times in the Oval Office, said she has had trouble maintaining romantic relationships and getting jobs after her scandal made her notorious around the world.
Monica, 42, said laughter really is the best medicine for dealing with humiliation and bullying. In a YouTube video posted Sept. 28 (see above), Lewinsky recounted an incident in 2012 when she was depressed after reading a false story about herself.
“There had been a false media story about me that had gone viral,” recalled Lewinsky, who said a friend had sent her an email with links to 10 funny blooper videos.
“My first reaction was, I was in a bad mood and upset and a little annoyed but I clicked on one of the links and within seconds, was laughing. I realized the value of humor and laughter is that is can shift the moment, like a lighting bolt, and remind you things can be different.”
Lewinsky, an ambassador for the anti-bullying group Bystander Revolution, suggested making or sending a funny video to someone who’s going through a hard time or has been bullied, because laughter truly can heal.
It took me a long time to heal and be ready but I’ve finally been able to take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past. I want other people to know they can do this, too.”
After news of Lewinsky’s sex scandal broke in 1998, she was branded a homewrecker and was teased for her chubby, frumpy looks. Former peers at Beverly Hills High School recalled that Monica went to an expensive fat camp for two summers to lose weight. Her classmates remembered Lewinsky as “the tubby girl with makeup” who tried desperately to be popular but could never overcome her dumpy image.
Monica has lost weight in recent years and has not resorted to extensive plastic surgery, unlike her former friend Linda Tripp. Tripp, who secretly recorded her confidential phone calls with Lewinsky during her affair with Clinton, underwent a drastic plastic surgery makeover after repeatedly being called “ugly” when her part in the scandal was exposed.
In one notable incident, Lewinsky had a blue Gap dress that was stained with Clinton’s semen after she administered oral sex to him. Linda Tripp encouraged Monica to save the dress “for your own ultimate protection” should she ever be accused of lying about her affair with Clinton. When Monica insisted that would never happen, Tripp told her the dress made her look “really fat” and she should never wear it again.
While the sex scandal with Bill Clinton has defined her public persona and given her an odd celebrity, Monica said she’s proud of the person she has become. “Even though I have suffered from shame, I’m not ashamed of who I am,” said Lewinsky.
