A mom who had the cops arrest her 10-year-old son because he was out of control is polarizing the social media sites today with camps awarding her kudos and others saying she should go to jail. So which is it, was this mom’s scare tactics appropriate or did she traumatize the child for the rest of his life?
“Fox and Friends Weekend” on Sunday morning read tweets about this mom’s decision to have the cops do a mock arrest to scare her son straight. Some applauded the mom, while others thought she did nothing more than turn the kid against the cops for the rest of his life.
According to Sports Act on May 3, the Georgia mom whose 10-year-old son was behaving badly intervened with the help of the police. She had the cops come to the house and talk to her son about his behavior. They then told him that getting arrested was no picnic and then went through a mock arrest for this child to experience what misbehaving can lead to.
They cuffed him and then put him in the back of the police car for about five minutes. When he was released, according to Fox News 28 local news, he ran to his mom and gave her a hug and apologized. You can see how upset this child was by the pictures above. It was the photos that the mom posted on Facebook of this event that created this viral story.
The child wasn’t behaving in school, he was disrespecting his teacher and he wasn’t doing the work required of him while at school. What was probably the most disturbing aspect of this mock arrest was the pictures posted to Facebook of the child who looks traumatized by this incident, as many commenting suggest.
Defending her actions, Chiquita Hill posted on Facebook, “Everyone has their own parenting style…This was mine, and it worked,” Hill wrote on her Facebook page under the name Jada Powell. “I am nipping the problem before it gets to the point like the Baltimore mother and her son. Although I do understand what she is feeling because that’s her only son, I REFUSE to let my son get that far.”
One Twitter user wrote that the child will fear the police the rest of his life, after seeing how upset he was in the pictures that his mom posted to Facebook. Another tweet read on “Fox and Friends Weekend” suggested the mother be thrown in a cell for what she had done to her son.
An ABC News article is riddled with people applauding this mom. DosFridas, a commenter on the ABC News article wrote, “Amen. His mom seized a teachable moment that could end up being a huge turning point in her son’s life. Bravo to all involved: it takes a village…”
Another comment from someone who posted as “Personal” on the ABC article suggests “No one should put handcuffs on a child.” This is something that others had a hard time with, seeing the child in handcuffs and really traumatized by the event. This mom knows her son better than anyone and for some reason she felt this would benefit her child. She later reported that it did.
While the mother does take a chance at tainting her son against police, she may take an even bigger chance at her son getting into deep trouble and ruining his life with police records and jail if she didn’t do something this drastic to change his direction in life. Did this mom do the right thing?
