The Minnesota Wild matched a season-high with their third straight victory with a 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday at PNC Arena.
Jason Zucker and Ryan Suter started and finished the Wild’s comeback. Zucker notched his fourth goal by slipping past Faulk off a pass from Suter and sped in to rip a wrist shot of the glove shoulder of Cam Ward with four minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The two combined for the game-winning goal combined on the game-winning goal with one minute and 10 seconds remaining in overtime. Mikko Koivu started the game-winning rush with a headman pass through neutral zone. Suter cut across the top of the circles with both Zucker and Koivu crashing the net. Zucker was able to tip Suter’s pass just inside the post for the winner.
The Wild (10-3-2) were playing catch up most of the game. The Hurricanes dominated for large chucks of the game and did not allow the Wild to sustain their forecheck. With limited offensive zone time, the Wild had to score off the rush.
The Hurricanes (6-9-1) got the game’s first two goals early in the first period. Justin Faulk got the scoring started with a slap shot through two Wild defenders and past Devan Dubnyk just five seconds into the game’s first power play at the 4:26 mark.
Andrej Nestraysil extended the lead to 2-0 three minutes and 51 seconds later with an overturned challenge by Hurricanes coach Bill Peters. Referee Dean Morton ruled on the ice that Jay McClement made incidental contact with Dubnyk to create the open net. After looking at the review, Morton and Jean Hebert decided Matt Dumba pushed McClement into Dubnyk. The play started with one of many soft plays by the Wild in the defensive zone led to a turnover at the blue line. By the end of the period, were outshot 19-5 and out chanced by even larger margin. Still, the Wild were only down by one goal.
Thomas Vanek evened the game at 2-2 with a wrist shot off a pass from Jason Pominville into the net near the midway point of the second period. Mikael Granlund also assisted on the goal.
