The Minnesota Wild overcame two bad early goals to force overtime, but could not complete the comeback. David Backes ripped a wrist shot just under the cross bar for his second goal of the game with just over 33 seconds remaining in overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory Saturday at the Scottrade Center.
Backes got the scoring started with a wrist shot that fooled Devan Dubnyk. The Wild’s goaltender had a clear view of the shot, which was clearly just a dump-in shot on goal that Dubnyk missed. It may have deflected by the stick of Marco Scandella, but it would have happened immediately. It is definitely a goal Dubnyk would like to have back.
The Blues (8-2-1) extended their lead to 2-0 five minutes and 53 seconds later. Mikko Koivu made the bad play on this goal. The Wild’s captain tried to send a breakout pass, but instead put the pass right on the stick of Alexander Steen. The Blues forward worked his way around Ryan Suter before firing a shot over the blocker-side shoulder of Dubnyk.
The Wild (7-2-2) scored a pair of goals in a four minute and three second span late in the first period.
Jason Zucker started the rally with a wrist over the glove-side shoulder of Jake Allen. Zucker received a lob pass at center ice from Suter and beat Alex Pietrangelo to his shooting position at the top of the circle. Zucker had his head driven into the ice and held their for several seconds by Carl Gunnarsson.
Erik Haula tied the game at the 19:17 mark of the first period with a quick shot off a pass from Thomas Vanek. Vanek pass out of the corner came after Haula and Chris Porter forced a turnover at the half board.
