The University of Miami UMindfulness initiative and Professor Amishi Jha will present The Healing Power of Mindfulness: Living Your Moments as if They Really Mattered – Because They Do, a lecture and conversation with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.. This premiere event will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at 5:30 PM in the Shalala Student Center Ballroom at the University of Miami Coral Gables Campus. There will be a book signing following the lecture.
Jon Kabat-Zinn is an acclaimed writer and meditation teacher, and is currently professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was founding director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society and the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic. Kabat-Zinn has authored several books, including Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life. The talk at the University of Miami will include discussion of the latest research on the effects of mindfulness meditation. Dr. Kabat-Zinn will explore how our consciously interfacing with the unfolding of our lives from moment to moment can make a difference in our own mental, emotional, and physical well-being, as well as the functioning of society as a whole. The presentation will include time for dialogue with the audience and mindfulness practice exercises for those attending.
Mindfulness meditation is a practice rooted in Buddhist traditions, where meditators develop skills for handling mental stress and mind chatter, learning to consciously observe their thoughts rather than being controlled or consumed by them. In the field of psychology and psychotherapy mindfulness techniques have been recognized as a valuable aid to reducing stress, depression, and anxiety. The University of Miami has become a center for clinical research into mindfulness practices and their benefits. Professor Jha has gained notoriety for studying how mindfulness affects people who deal with stress in their vocation, such as soldiers, athletes, and emergency responders.
