Melissa McCarthy has just launched her clothing line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7, shortly after her 50-pound weight loss on a low-carb diet. McCarthy said her apparel is not just for plus-sized women and spans sizes 4 to 28.
“Women come in all sizes,” Melissa told Refinery Aug. 17. “Seventy percent of women in the United States are a size 14 or above, and that’s technically ‘plus-size,’ so you’re taking your biggest category of people and telling them, ‘You’re not really worthy.’ I find that very strange.”
Melissa decided to launch her own clothing line after being unable to find flattering outfits in her size. McCarthy, who recently lost 50 pounds on a low-carb diet, recently showed off her fashion skills by wearing her own designs to the premiere of her film “Spy.”
Despite her 50-pound low-carb weight loss, Melissa still champions larger women “because women do not stop at a size 12.” Even though she’s a successful actress, Melissa has always dreamed of having her own fashion line.
“From grade school until age 20, I had one thought in my head, which was doing women’s clothing,” said McCarthy. “To get to come back to it is kind of crazy. It’s pretty dreamy.”
McCarthy said society needs to stop fat-shaming plus size women. “I feel like there’s a big thing missing where you can’t dress to your mood above a certain number,” said Melissa.
Melissa, who was once a size 6, said women don’t stop caring about fashion simply because they’re plus size, and she doesn’t understand why this consumer segment continues to be marginalized.
“[Malls] segregate plus-size [women],” said McCarthy. “I don’t like the segregated plus section. You’re saying: ‘You don’t get what everybody else gets. You have to go shop up by the tire section.’”
Clothes Range From Size 4 To 28: Priced $59 To $159
McCarthy launched her clothing line earlier this month on the Home Shopping Network (HSN). The clothing line contain 80 pieces from sizes 4 to 28 and is priced from $59 to $159. Melissa McCarthy Seven7 is available at retailers around the world, including Nordstrom, Macy’s and Lane Bryant.
McCarthy looks fantastic after losing 50 pounds with a low-carb, high-protein diet, Celebrity Health & Fitness reported. She also exercised, doing Pilates workouts and walking.
McCarthy has not specified which low carb diet she followed, but Sam Smith and Tim McGraw both lost weight on the low-carb Paleo diet. Low carb diets such as the Atkins, ketogenic and Atkins diets promote rapid weight loss by inducing the body to burn fat for fuel, said obesity expert Dr. Eric Westman.
The 5-foot-2 McCarthy, who previously weighed 265 pounds, is now healthier after cutting bread and pasta out of her diet. “Melissa has been on a high-protein, low carb diet,” said a source. “She’s been making small changes and seeing big results.”
McCarthy’s weight loss motivation was a desire to be healthy for her daughters, Vivian and Georgette, with husband Ben Falcone. Melissa, who has been overweight most of her life, said she had tried many times to lose weight on various diets. With her low-carb diet, it appears she may reach her weight loss goals.
