In today’s age, a flawless event is worth more than a thousand words, and its unforgettable-memory will forever be etched in the brains of its attendees. Where art imitates life, an extraordinary event is its luxurious backdrop.
The know-how, or design wizardry, to produce or coordinate such memorable events, takes countless hours of preparation, marketing, and teamwork.
Our guests today—Amanda Saint-Val and Andrea Gilgeous, exemplify the real essence of a great event decorating team. Together, they operate Primrose Couture Events, one of the most sought-after event planning firms in New York City.
We sat down with the dynamic Brooklyn duo, and this is what they had to say…
Examiner: Tell us a little about Primrose Couture Events. How did it originate?
Primrose Couture Events: We started the company over a year ago, and recently, we celebrated our 1-year anniversary. The idea came about when we realized that we were highly involved with organizing events for our friends, church, and community. It basically was a small hobby, and then we realized that we wanted to share our passion with Brooklyn, and bring class and ambiance that Brooklynites never experienced.
Examiner: When did you know that you wanted to open an event-decorating business?
PCE: The realization came when it became a passion; plus we work so well as a team. We love event planning, so opening a company to please our clients came naturally.
Examiner: The fact that the both of you are sisters is awesome. What are the perks of working with your sibling?
PCE: It works out perfectly. Amanda brings the creative aspect, and I bring the business aspect to the company. We are extremely close and work well together. We have the best bond. Of course we have disagreements, but we are pretty level headed. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with.
Examiner: Who are some of your influences?
PCE: One of our influences is Karen Tran. We love how she focuses on the smallest details, and we appreciate how over the top her work is. But our biggest influence is our mother. She is the strongest woman we know, and she is the epitome of what we aspire to be.
Examiner: What positive feedbacks have you gotten so far?
PCE: We love the emails we receive from other aspiring planners. They motivate us to do better. Each email is a reminder that we are on the path to greatness. We are also blessed to have the support of our friends and family, and currently, there is an outpouring of people who are rooting for us to win.
Facing obstacles thus far in our career has molded us to continue striving for greatness.” — Primrose Couture Events
Examiner: What event would be your dream event to decorate?
PCE: We would love the opportunity to decorate an event for Beyonce. She’s the best because she exudes beauty and confidence. We see ourselves creating something so grand for her, and also for Aunty Oprah.
Examiner: What’s the greatest obstacle you had to overcome, and how did you overcome it?
PCE: The biggest obstacle is getting people to see how passionate we are about our business, and getting them to understand the hard work and dedication that goes into planning these events. We set up our events beautifully for all of our clients, but getting them to pay the amount that it’s worth—to create an unforgettable event, is sometimes challenging.
Examiner: What’s your most-memorable event-decorative moment?
PCE: We have produced many great events, but planning Nene Leakes’ Cinderella on Broadway was our most memorable event moment. We only had one day of preparation, which was extremely exciting, but we worked very well under pressure. The event turned out beautiful, and it was an amazing experience working with Nene and Gregg Leakes. They were humbled and appreciative of our hard work.
We also loved working with Pressure Busspipe; he is truly an inspiration to us. We have a common thread with him; he comes from Caribbean heritage, and we are of Guyanese decent.
Examiner: What’s your favorite color and why?
PCE: Our favorite color is PINK. It’s the perfect color because it’s youthful, fun and exciting. We are very girly, and we love when our clients choose this color. Every shade of pink is perfect!
Examiner: What advice would you give to an aspiring event decorator?
PCE: Our advice would be to never doubt yourself, and if you’re not passionate about your field—don’t pursue it. Passion is a big part of the equation to success. The biggest advice we can give is to never give up. It may seem like you aren’t getting clients, but the more you show—the more you book. So do free events for friends and family, and put your all into it.
Examiner: Years from now, when people say Primrose Couture Events, what will they say?
PCE: They will say that we are one of the best event-planning companies around. They will say those girls had a dream and created an empire.
Examiner: For business inquiries, how can people get in contact with you?
PCE: For business inquiries, please visit our website at Primrose Couture Events; or contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org; or via telephone at (718) 290-7525. We are also on every social media outlet—Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
Examiner: Thanks for a great interview, and as honored guests, is there anything else you would like to say?
PCE: Thank you for granting us the opportunity to share our business with you, and we would like to share one of Vince Lombardi’s quotes, the one that our mother love reciting to us: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”
