There were a handful of unfortunate souls that greeted the recent announcement of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival’s 2016 dates with tranquil indifference – namely, triskaidekaphobes planning to avoid the 13th annual instalment of the Grand Canyon State’s premier music event anyway. As for the rest of the music loving public, the MMMF will thrill festers from March 11-13, 2016 on the grass-lined fields of Phoenix’ Margaret T. Hance Park for three full days of music, food, art, culture and more.
The 2016 edition will continue the Festival’s 13-year legacy of outstanding music and entertainment. Since the event’s 2004 launch, the McDowell Mountain stages have hosted remarkable performances from David Crosby, The Black Crowes, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Blues Traveler, Ben Harper and The Shins among many others. Organizers will be hard-pressed to top the 2015 lineup – brilliantly headlined by Widespread Panic, Phantogram and Trombone Shorty – but given the Festival’s exceptional musical history, don’t bet against them.
Historically held in late March, organizers moved up the 2016 Festival to take advantage of Arizona’s mild spring weather, working to ensure the perfect mix of sunny days and cool nights. In a recent press release announcing the 2016 dates, MMMF founder and organizer John Largay explained, “Spring is an outstanding time in the Valley. We want festival-goers to enjoy the sun and music all the same, and early March is certainly the month for both.”
The MMMF is the only 100 percent non-profit music festival in Arizona, designed to promote three elements – community involvement, corporate participation and charity. All proceeds from the festival will benefit local charities to be chosen during an upcoming selection process. The 2015 Festival raised more than $120,000 for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and UMOM New Day Centers, the largest shelter for homeless families in the state. The MMMF exists to support, entertain and educate the community, the arts and families, attracting thousands of visitors nationwide each year for great music, beautiful Arizona weather and an opportunity to experience unmatched culture.
