A chaotic beach scene dubbed the “Massachusetts beach brawl” in the media today started as a lazy Sunday afternoon that turned into a knock-down, drag-out fight. This brawl had as many as 200 beach visitors on Mother’s Day take part in the action. Police from at least eight different cities and towns along with numerous law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts came to this beach brawl Sunday afternoon to help with restoring the peace, reports the Huffington Post on May 11.
The brawl at Revere Beach, Massachusetts started when a fight broke out between two women over a stolen handbag and then their boyfriends joined in. Within minutes it was a scene that was the polar opposite of the “Beach Blanket Bingo” days seen in the movies of yesteryear. Frolicking in the sun was replaced with punches thrown, cans whipped at police and people carted off in handcuffs. People were screaming and yelling in this Mother’s Day afternoon melee.
This Massachusetts beach brawl started on a beach where traditionally beach goers enjoy a lazy sunny afternoon, but on Mother’s Day Sunday, they got violent, according to The Boston Globe. Revere Beach is just north of Boston, Massachusetts.
Reports had police being bombarded with beverage containers. Police came to help from “pretty much all of Eastern Massachusetts and some of Central Massachusetts,” according to State Police Lieutenant Dan Richard.
Witnesses report seeing a police officer get punched in the face by one of the girls who was involved in the original fight that started the whole thing. “”Everybody started screaming people were throwing full cans of coke in the air trying to hit cop cars,” said another witness, according to a Twitter post from WZB reporter Nicole Jacobs.”
The fight escalated with people getting upset as their friends were being arrested and then more and more people were arrested turning the beach into one chaotic scene. One of the biggest problems for the many different law enforcement agencies was getting their vehicles to the area of Revere Beach where the fight was occurring.
Because there was such a melee going on, it drew even more crowds of people snarling traffic to the point of looking as if it was the height of rush hour in downtown Boston. Many different law enforcement agencies came to the area to assist police with an out of control situation. This includes units from Lynn, Chelsea, Boston, Everett, Winthrop, the Massachusetts State Police, Transit Police and Environmental Police all came to the scene to assist, according to WCVB in Boston.
The Revere Police Department sent their prisoner wagon to help transport the people who were arrested and it couldn’t get through all the traffic caused by this beach brawl. The police report 12 people were arrested in this Mother’s Day melee.
