Electronic Arts’ Mass Effect™ videogame series developed by BioWare™ will be coming to California’s Great America next season as a first of its kind rider experience. According to an announcement released early Tuesday, September 29th by California’s Great America, the ride will feature a blend of 3D animation, 4D effects, motion simulation and live performance to create a compelling and immersive attraction.
“Partnering with a world-wide gaming leader like EA will enable us to build an incredible user experience for our guests,” said California’s Great America Vice President and General Manager Raul Rehnborg. “This combination of technology and creative videogame content is sure to usher in a new wave of entertainment innovation in amusement parks.”
The Mass Effect series is one of this generation’s most critically claimed collection of videogames and stands at or near the top of nearly every major gaming website’s lists of top games of all time. It was initially developed as a trilogy, with installments released in 2007, 2010 and 2012. Featuring a cohesive blend of role playing and first person shooter style action, the sweeping space opera follows the adventures of Commander Shepard as he or she (depending on gamer choice) embarks on an impossible mission to prevent a race of sentient machines from harvesting all life (human and alien) in the universe. The iconic spaceship from the series, the Normandy, was illustrated in Great America’s press release, suggesting it may play a role in the attraction. A fourth Mass Effect game, Mass Effect: Andromeda is scheduled to be released in 2016.
“EA and BioWare are thrilled to partner with Great America and see one of our most iconic games turned into an exciting high-tech attraction,” said Patrick O’Brien, Vice President of Entertainment and Licensing, EA. “Having a partner who shares our commitment to thrilling our fans is extremely important to us and we look forward to building an attraction that will appeal to the Mass Effect fan-base and introduce it to many more.”
The attraction will take place in Great America’s Action Theater, which previously hosted Happy Feet: Mumble’s Wild Ride. The Action Theater originally opened in 1994 with a Days of Thunder themed film. Work to renovate the theater for the Mass Effect ride is already underway.
Based in Santa Clara, California’s Great America is currently open on select weekend days for its annual Halloween Haunt, which Examiner will review this weekend. The park closes after Halloween. The 2016 season schedule has yet to be announced, but the park has historically reopened for the season in March. The exact opening date for the Mass Effect attraction is still to be announced.
