Val Kilmer’s frail, sickly appearance after his recent weight loss has reignited rumors he’s battling throat cancer. Kilmer hid beneath a dark hoodie and a white bandana mask that covered his mouth and throat as he made his way through Los Angeles International Airport Aug. 11.
Kilmer has also been photographed running errands in Malibu, California, hiding his throat under thick, billowy scarves. Val’s sudden weight loss and new penchant for covering his throat with scarves have fueled rampant speculation he’s battling cancer.
Kilmer, 55, was hospitalized in January, but denied having a throat tumor or cancer, Yahoo reported. Val confirmed his hospitalization on Facebook, but insisted he does not have throat cancer.
“I am perfectly well folks,” Kilmer wrote on Facebook in June. “I do not have cancer or a tumor. There has been a swelling that I have covered during this period of recovery from a procedure I had done which was not an operation on this area. I imagine I’m going to keep wearing scarfs till the swelling goes down.”
In February, insiders said Kilmer’s family is worried sick his religion is killing him (see video). Sources told TMZ Val refused to seek medical treatment for a possibly cancerous throat tumor because of his religious beliefs. Kilmer, a devout Christian Scientist, reportedly believes prayer can heal him.
Insiders claimed Kilmer underwent surgery, where doctors discovered a tumor after Val started coughing up blood and his throat swelled to twice its size. However, Kilmer denied these reports.
Kilmer first raised eyebrows after unveiling his shocking weight loss in the fall of 2014. At the time, Val explained on Facebook that he had lost weight to play the role of Mark Twain. Kilmer said he began dieting and working out rigorously to play Twain, who was thin. Val’s weight loss secrets were a clean diet and lots of walking.
“I’m preparing for my dream role, Mark Twain, in a film I’ve written and will direct about his obsession with Mary Baker Eddy,” wrote Kilmer. “Mark Twain was a thin man, and finally after the usual amount of effort, I’m thin again too. Perfect health.”
Val, who was criticized for being scary-skinny, added: “I have been urged by friends to post something about my perfect health and weight loss. Can’t win in this crazy town. Too heavy for too many years and now gossip says, too thin!”
Val Kilmer’s drastic weight loss is a stark contrast from the past few years, when the athletic former “Batman” star was called “Fatman” after gaining a dramatic amount of weight.
