Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are expecting a baby in the near future! The expansion in the Zuckerberg family appears to be a welcomed addition. He posted on his Facebook page on Friday (July 31) that he and Priscilla wanted to share their exciting news with his followers. Also, to let them know of their struggles along the way as it was not easy to get this far.
Zuckerberg explained that he and Priscilla have been trying to start a family for a couple of years now but Priscilla has had three miscarriages. He said he would start to imagine their (children) futures with hopes and dreams only to have it vanish or “gone.” It then becomes a lonely experience as most people don’t talk about having a miscarriage as if losing a baby makes a person defective.
Not only does it not make a person defective, but up to 25% of women have miscarriages. Most of these miscarriages occur within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy during the initial excitement of expanding a family. The emotional high, then the emotional ‘let-down’ of losing a baby can be devastating to a couple. Most couples grieve the loss alone, not discussing it with family and friends. Zuckerberg wants to change that.
He realized how frequently a miscarriage happens in a pregnancy when he started talking to his friends. He also realized that couples can have healthy children after a miscarriage. This communication appeared to make him more comfortable sharing his story with the world. Now, he wants the world to feel comfortable in sharing their stories.
Zuckerberg said in his Facebook post that during the ultrasound viewing, Zuckerbaby gave him a ‘thumbs up.’ She already takes after him!
