If you’ve attended one tasting event, you’ve attended them all, right? Wrong? Generally, these graze-fests are zooish — understocked with food and drink, overstocked with people jockeying for space and the few small plates that ever seem actually to materialize.
I have been to too many of those events, which run a close second in creature comforts only to a ride on the New York subway at rush hour. But I am here to tell you about the one standout: the one shining tasting gala that I look forward to each year and have attended for the past three. I am referring to New York magazine’s annual New York Taste event, this year dubbed New York Taste Presented by Citi.
The signature culinary event is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Waterfront Building between 6 and 9 p.m. This year, more than 40 of the Big Apple’s most celebrated chefs and rising stars will serve up their delectable wares. Among the luminaries you will find are Markus Glocker (Bâtard), Justin Smillie (Upland), Heather Pelletier (Osteria Morini), Bryce Shuman & Eamon Rockey (Betony), Sam Mason (OddFellows Ice Cream Co.), Joe Ng (Red Farm), Julie Reiner (Leyenda), JJ Johnson (The Cecil), Cédric Vongerichten(Perry St), Bobby Schaffer (Blue Hill at Stone Barns), and Jamie Bissonnette & Ken Oringer (Toro). A complete list of participants appears further down.
The event will not only nourish your body but your soul: A portion of the proceeds are donated to City Harvest to help fight hunger in New York City. Tickets are on sale at nymag.com/taste, and regular updates will be posted to Twitter from @nymtaste.
General admission tickets are priced $100. VIP tickets run $195, and include admission to a special preview hour (6 to 7 pm), access to the VIP lounge, and a VIP gift bag filled with a variety of products, including culinary tools. As an exclusive benefit for Citi cardholders, New York’s chief restaurant critic Adam Platt will host a Q&A at the event with Dan Barber, co-owner and executive chef of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, and a member of the City Harvest Food Council. Additional event sponsors include Celebrity Cruises, Jaguar / Land Rover of Manhattan, Stella Artois, Squarespace, Victorinox, Taylor Creative, and Tekserve.
