Summer is the time most Americans celebrate everything that is American. And nobody symbolizes America more than Norma Jeane Mortenson. Perhaps you know her better as Marilyn Monroe. Even nearly 53 years after her death, Marilyn remains one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
That star power is on display at the Marilyn Monroe Spa at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress resort in Orlando. The two go together like Marilyn and her trademark platinum blond hair. That is, the 1500-acre Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, now in its 31st year, is an icon among Orlando resorts; Marilyn is an icon among, well, icons.
The spa is resplendent in white with black and red accents – Marilyn’s favorite colors – and is adorned with pictures of the star herself. The 5,200 square-foot spa features seven treatment rooms; a couples’ suite; relaxation room; men’s and women’s locker rooms with full height lockers; and Glamour Room with three “Nap and Nails,” mani/pedi lounges.
A visit here is touted as a visit to Marilyn’s California home. The atmosphere is vibrant, playful and social.
I was never at Marilyn’s home, of course, but it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to realize the atmosphere is different than at most spas. There is nothing sterile and intimidating about the spa – located on the resort’s lobby level.
Like its namesake, the Marilyn Monroe Spa, which opened this past December at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, is welcoming and alluring.
“Everything we did we really had Marilyn in mind,’’ said Lisa Gueorguiev, area manager for Marilyn Monroe Spas-Florida.
That includes everything from the massage treatments (try the Gemstone massage), wraps, facials and pedicures, to the Marilyn signature line of all natural products.
“Everything has something to do with her life,’’ Gueorguiev said.
For the nail polishes, for example, there is the self-explanatory “Natural Beauty,’’ as well as “Joe & I,’’ named for one-time husband and baseball legend Joe DiMaggio; “Blue’’ for the color of her eyes; and “Gemini,’’ because she was born June 1.
“Every color tells a story,’’ Gueorguiev said.
Marilyn’s story – even after all these years – remains a great one. You can get a glimpse at it at the spa that bears her name.
“We want everyone to come in and be themselves and have a wonderful time,’’ Gueorguiev said. “That’s what Marilyn was all about. She was fun.’’
So go have some fun – and share in a small piece of Marilyn’s story.
