Marie Holmes, a recent lottery winner, is facing drug charges for marijuana possession this week. Unfortunately for the lucky woman who just hit a $188 million Powerball jackpot earlier this year, a criminal citation might dampen the joy of her winnings. Canada Journal News shares the latest details on this odd news case this Friday, July 24, 2015.
Winning the lottery sounds like a dream, and even then, one might hope to win several hundred or thousands of dollars — let alone a million. Yet for Marie Holmes, those numbers might be considered small. The 26-year-old from North Carolina discovered she had managed to hit the $188 million lottery jackpot Powerball back in February along with two other lucky winners. This Thursday, however, local police officials say that she was cited for possession of marijuana.
According to the press release, an additional two other individuals were also brought in over the drugs, while a third person of interest is currently being held with a $6 million bond. Yesterday, Holmes was charged with possession of weed as well as ownership of apparent marijuana related paraphernalia. Police conducted a search of her residence late that night.
In their news report, WXII 12 adds that Holmes was cited in Shallotte, Brunswick County, along Boverie Street. It was not stated whether Marie had any comment when the drugs were found in her home. The names and identities of the others cited at the time of her search have since been released.
One of the suspects had been arrested in late 2014. Lamar Andre McDow of North Carolina was jailed at the $6 million bond because he had violated the court orders from a “pretrial release,” said law enforcement authorities. McDow had reportedly missed his curfew. He is 31 years old and was placed under arrest back in November.
At the time, McDow was brought into custody over two separate heroin charges, and was behind bars until February. He is an alleged gang member and has participated in widespread drug sales in the past, when a previous investigation found hundreds of bags of heroin in his possession. He managed to post bail at a bond set under $3 million. McDow is now accused of marijuana paraphernalia, additional drug charges, and illicit firearm possession, adds ABC 11 News.
The other two cited by police alongside lottery winner Marie Holmes on marijuana related charges are 21-year-old Damarius Simmons and 31-year-old Danell McNeil. Local authorities said they were initially intending to arrest McDow only, yet the smell of marijuana in the home raised concerns. They managed to obtain a search warrant and discovered drug paraphernalia as well as a .45-caliber pistol within the residence. The investigation is ongoing. Hopefully Marie Holmes’ $188 million winnings can help provide some comfort following the drug citation.
