On Aug. 26, 2015, atombash.com was on the scene for a fabulous American Express tennis event called “Rally on the River.” The exclusive gathering was one of many US Open related festivities that happened this week. It was a beautiful evening on Pier 97 of Hudson River Park. Before the interactive tennis match, guests enjoyed delicious light bites and sandwiches, while they sipped on Evian water and sampled Lavazza coffee. For dessert, ice cream sandwiches and popsicles were served.
Notables in attendance included tennis stars Maria Sharapova, John Isner and Monic Puig, comedian/actor Kevin James and electro-funk duo Chromeo were on the turntables. For over 20 years as a US Open partner, American Express has enhanced the tournament for Card Members and tennis fans across the nation by delivering unparalleled experiences that heighten their passion and bring them closer to the sport. The packed crowd of VIPs and American Express Card Members had the opportunity to witness the first-ever hydro-interactive tennis experience celebrating the past, present and future of tennis. Projected onto a massive wall of water, fans watched as Sharapova, James, Puig, Isner and a few lucky fans in the crowd stepped onto the court to use the interactive, responsive tennis rackets designed to translate in real-time every swing, lob and smash into stunning 3D graphics, animations, sounds and video projections. It was truly a unique and magical experience.
Last week, American Express announced a multi-year partnership with Sharapova. Fans will have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to return Sharapova’s serve and ground strokes at the American Express Fan Experience on-site at the Open, through the “You Vs. Sharapova” virtual reality activation. This is the first ever virtual reality experience to feature a live action and CGI version of an athlete simultaneously to create one user experience. Wednesday night’s “Rally on the River” event was a continuation of American Express’ strong legacy of bringing fans closer to the game they love through unique experiences.
“Our long standing partnership with the United States Tennis Association makes experiences like these possible. I’d like to acknowledge their leadership. Everything they do to promote tennis across the country, and the visionaries behind this great event who are here tonight to celebrate with us, thank you. In addition to the US Open, we are proud to be a long term partner of USTA’s fresh court initiative, an extension to serving our community. SM: Speak about collaborating with American Express for this event today.
Monica Puig: This is my second year with American Express, we had the fresh court campaign and now with the rally on the Hudson this year it’s like really exciting for me to be a part of, especially with John and Maria and including myself in this is kind of like wow. This is what I worked for all year, this is what I worked for in my practices to be a part of things like this and to be considered and I’m really excited for tonight.
SM: Speak about how you became passionate and involved in tennis for people who don’t know.
MP: I started when I was six years old. My mom gave me my first racket and I was kind of in between doing other things and I didn’t really know what to do and tennis just kind of stuck with me and I think it’s the best decision I could’ve made in my life so it’s brought me this far … I’m enjoying one day at a time and I’m really enjoying my life right now and it’s just an amazing feeling knowing that I’ve done so much.
SM: Speak about the US Open and why this tournament is so special.
MP: The US Open is always my favorite grand slam in terms of there’s a lot of Puerto Ricans that come out and support and the vibe is so electric at night time and day time. There’s the crowd, everyone get’s really involved in the matches and I think that is spectacular.
