Lighthouse enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that the Marblehead Lighthouse located at Marblehead State Park along the shores of Lake Erie is now open for the season and they are offering daily tours from the day after Memorial Day until the Friday before Labor Day. Don’t miss your chance to climb to the top of the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation in all of the Great Lakes.
Marblehead Lighthouse Built in 1821 with a limestone exterior (now covered with a masonry finish), Marblehead Lighthouse offers breathtaking views of several Lake Erie islands. On a clear day you can even see the Cleveland shoreline. Inside the lighthouse is a brick stack which was constructed in the late 1800’s to raise the Lighthouse tower’s height by an additional 15 feet and an iron staircase dating back to the early 1900’s. It is a 77 step climb to the top of the Lighthouse.
Also on the grounds is the Keeper’s House which was built in 1880 and was designed to house both the Keeper and the Assistant Keeper and their families. The house now serves as a museum which visitors can tour.
Items in the museum include historical photos, a rare three and one-half order Fresnel lens, a scale replica of the Mackinaw ice breaker ship and artifacts depicting community life and industry in the area including quarrying, fishing and the early practice of medicine.
