Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s night was long over by the time Trevor Siemian and wide receiver Corbin Louks hooked up for a 26 yard scoring play with 1:44 showing on the game clock. The score allowed the Denver Broncos to escape with a 14-10 win over the Houston Texans on Saturday night and remain undefeated in pre-season play.
Manning opened the game completing his first two passes in 2015 as the Broncos came out with an up tempo offense to start the game. The former Super Bowl MVP completed 8 of 14 for 52 yards in his first action.
Brock Osweiler did on his first series what Peyton Manning, Ryan Mallett or Brian Hoyer could not do over the first 22;39 of Saturday night’s game. He led Denver on an 80 yard, 8 play scoring drive throwing a touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell to cover the final 57 yards. It was the longest preseason touchdown throw against Houston since Manning threw a 67 yard strike to Emmanuel sanders on August 14, 2014.
In his post-game press conference the, the years seem to fall off the shoulders of the 18 year veteran when I asked him what pleased him most about the Broncos win.
““I was really proud of Trevor making that last drive and throw and Corbin coming down with that ball,” Manning said with a smile. “It’s always good to see that because all those young guys worked real hard all through training camp. We broke training camp on Thursday and to make it through a training camp in the NFL is not easy. Everybody on this roster right now has really done a good job.”
Siemian’s heroics came after Houston had taken a 10-7 lead on a 32 yard field goal from Randy Bullock on the Texans opening drive of the second half and pick six by Houston outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
With 3:44 showing on the game clock, Denver began the game winning drive from their own eight yard line. It was the fourth time Houston had pinned the Broncos inside the ten yard line. Five plays later facing third and three from the 44, Siemian’s pass was incomplete to rookie wideout Jordan Taylor but Houston’s Darryl Morris was flagged for pass interference and the Broncos had new life at the Texans 26 yard line. Out of the shotgun, the rookie quarterback struck on third and ten for the game winner.
“The longer you play, the more you appreciate young guys and trying to earn a spot on the team,” Manning concluded. “A lot of guys fighting for jobs out there tonight so that’s good to see and really good to see those guys make a couple plays to help us win the game.”
Denver rolled up 383 yards of offense while improving to 5-2 all-time in preseason action against the Texans. The Broncos look to continue their winning ways hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night August 29, 2015. Kick at Mile High is set for 7:00p.m. MDT.
