There has been a great deal of angry men over Max Rockatansky’s return. And I simply do not get it. As a fan of Mad Max since I was young and had no idea the first movie was post-apocalyptic (I just thought Australia was in bad shape) I had been eagerly awaiting a new installment. The fact that it has strong female characters was a good thing in my mind. Most action spectacles treat the women simply as eye candy who are too dumb to take care of themselves. If you have a problem with strong women then you are the weaker person. But, I digress, we’re here o talk about one of the most anticipated films of the year. And though it’s been thirty years since Max was on the big screen, the series is still amazingly awesome.
The story of Fury Road is simple. Max is captured by a villain named Immortan Joe. Joe has a group of women he uses just for breeding, his Imperator named Furiosa tries to help them escape. She teams up with Max and they head off for the place Furiosa was born. A place that is supposedly untouched by radiation, a place of green. When Joe realizes what has happened he sets off to stop them.
This movie was so amazing I can barely do it justice. George Miller, who was the creator/director/writer of the original movies that starred Mel Gibson, has created such a world so unique it will blow your mind. He used very little CGI and did practically every stunt with stuntmen. It was cool to see all the madness unfold and know that unlike other franchises the crashes and smashes, and the fights were done for real. And the movie despite being set in a wasteland had things that were beautiful to look at.
The action was amazing. Like I said most of it was done for real and it made the action even better because we weren’t looking at a cartoon. There are set-pieces that I have no idea how they pulled it off without killing someone. The action movie carnage was a sight to behold.
The actors were great. Tom Hardy was an amazing choice for Max. He did his own thing with the character instead off just acting like Mel Gibson. And Charlize Theron played one of the best movie heroines I have ever seen. She was both strong and vulnerable without coming off as a damsel in distress. It was also great to see Hugh Keays-Byrne, who was the Toecutter in the original movie return to play an even more memorable villain Immortan Joe.
This movie has become one of my favorite films from one viewing. I can’t think of anything negative to say except I hated to see it end. But Tom Hardy said he’s signed on for three more movies so I feel that Mad Max will return. And that makes me smile. Five Stars.
I have added a link to the film’s website here. And a link to the content advisory page here. But you should go and see this movie as soon as you can, because experiencing Fury Road in the theater is a treat you can’t miss.
