You’ve heard the old saying “good things come in small packages”? That notion is perfectly exemplified by the Kingdom of Swaziland, the tiny African nation that is nevertheless packed with countless adventure opportunities.
Swaziland is actually southern Africa’s smallest nation but tour operators are finding that it is at the top of the list for those who want to visit a scenic and welcoming destination with a unique culture. Here are some of the tour operators who are currently booking very interesting trips to Swaziland.
Explore! – This company has only recently begun tours of Swaziland and their itineraries are quickly becoming one of their most popular. Highlights include a visit to the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, an overnight stay in the Shewula Mountain community, game drives and walking safaris in Mkhaya Game Reserve (black rhinos, white rhinos!), a visit to the scenic Malolotja Nature Reserve and an immersion into traditional Swazi culture.
Mountain Walking Holidays – Like their name suggests, this company organizes tours where you’ll do plenty of exploring on foot. Highlights of walking tours include a hike up Emlembe, the highest mountain in Swaziland, a visit to the old mining village of Bulembu, a day-hike through the wilderness to see wildlife and waterfalls and a half-day walk in the Shewula Mountain community. Non-walking adventures includes a game drive at Hlane Royal National Park, and for a true “taste” of Swaziland there’ll be a traditional Swazi dinner and a sampling of locally-brewed beer.
Sense Africa – These folks are Swaziland specialists and offer many itineraries including the “Swaziland in Style” tour. Participants will stay at the upmarket lodge Reilly’s Rock (they have their own botanical gardens) while visiting the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, spend time at the colonial-era Forester’s Arms Hotel in the heart of Swaziland, enjoy the forests and waterfalls of Phophonyane Nature Reserve and visit Hlane Royal National Park, home to Swaziland’s biggest game herds.
