Lionsgate Home Entertainment has a welcome habit of releasing nifty titles on Blu-ray and/or DVD . . . you’ll end up snuggling in for some heart-warming family fun, even if that means thrills or chills. Here are some of the best new titles worth a look.
“Nurse Jackie: Season 7” (Blu-ray and DVD, available now)
The twisted and darkly funny sitcom returns for its final season with Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, a role that has earned the actress six consecutive Emmy nominations. Nurse Jackie faces her biggest challenge yet, as the whole truth about her addiction is exposed to everyone. The stakes have never been higher, and the question is, can the world’s toughest nurse save herself? The 3-disc DVD and 2-disc Blu-ray set contains all season episodes and is loaded with special features including commentaries, behind-the-scenes interviews and exclusive featurettes.
“The End of the Tour” (Blu-ray and DVD, available November 3)
A warm, winning road-trip movie that follows journalist David Lipsky (portryaed by Jesse Eisenberg) as he interviews legendary author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), The End of the Tour explores friendship, fame, and creative rivalry through two people on a journey that is as moving as it is unforgettable. No wonder the film was the winner of Best Narrative Feature at the Sarasota Film Festival.
“A Horse Tale” (DVD, available November 17)
Saddle up and enjoy the ride of a lifetime in this heart-warming story about one family’s determination to save their farm in time for Christmas. Uptight city accountant, Michael Thompson (Patrick Muldoon), is struggling to raise his teenage daughter Chloe (Mandalynn Carlson) all on his own. So when he gets a call from Cliff Harrison (Rick Herod) to help save their family stables before ruthless bank managers shut them down, he wonders if the country life is just what they need to start over. Michael takes the job, even though he quickly finds out that Cliff’s daughter (Charisma Carpenter) is not as keen as the rest of the family for his help. But as they search for ways to save the family’s legacy, they find a future that they never expected.
“Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow” (DVD only, available November 24)Filled with whimsical creatures, state-of-the-art puppet effects and characters originally conceived by Henson and his longtime writing partner, Jerry Juhl, the story follows a recently divorced dad (played by Jay Harrington) and his two kids as they travel to celebrate Thanksgiving with their eccentric Aunt Cly (Mary Steenburgen) in the rustic town of Turkey Hollow. Exploring the mysterious surrounding woods leads the kids to discover the secret of the legendary Howling Hoodoo. When a scheming neighbor threatens to take Aunt Cly’s farm, the family enlists surprising new friends to help save the farm . . . and Thanksgiving Chris Bridges appears as an on-screen narrator in the film.
“Shaun the Sheep Movie” (Blu-ray and DVD, available November 24)
No one can be sheepish when it comes to this farm-tastic adventure for the young and young-at-heart. Shaun is a little sheep with big dreams, and lately, life on Mossy Bottom Farm has become a bit dull. When Shaun takes the day off for some fun in the Big City, he gets a lot more action than he bargained for. Now Shaun and his flock must use their wits to hatch a baaaa-rilliant plan to get back home in an adventure the whole family will love. Added bonuses: Shaun the Sheep Season 1 and Season 2 will also be available on Digital HD and Digital.
“American Ultra” (Blu-ray and DVD, available November 24)
This is a dynamic thrill ride that mixes explosive action with edgy humor. Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) shares a small-town life with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristin Stewart). But Mike’s sleepy world goes wild after he discovers that he’s actually a CIA sleeper agent with lethal fighting skills-and the target of government hitmen. Mike, the ultimate slacker, transforms into an ultra-attacker as he and Phoebe fight to survive in this exhilarating adventure. The Blu-ray edition features DTS:X immersive audio technology. DTS:X replicates and conveys the fluid movement of sound by accurately matching sounds to what is visually occurring on and off the screen to create a richer soundscape than has previously been possible.
“Some Kind of Beautiful” (Blu-ray and DVD, available December 1)
Richard (Pierce Brosnan) is a successful college professor who gives up a steady stream of one-night-stands and beautiful undergrads for fatherhood with much younger Kate (Jessica Alba). Three years later when Kate falls in love with someone else and moves out, she sends her sister, Olivia (Salma Hayek), to make sure Richard is properly caring for there son. Assuming Richard is back to his irresponsible playboy lifestyle, Olivia is shocked when she starts to fall in love with him, herself.
“Dragon Blade” (Blu-ray and DVD, available December 22)
The epic action-adventure follows one man’s quest to stop the Roman army and bring peace to his homeland. When corrupt Roman leader Tiberius (Adrien Brody) arrives with a giant army to claim the Silk Road, Huo An (Jackie Chan) and his group of trained warriors teams up with an elite legion of defected Roman soldiers, led by General Lucius (John Cusack), to maintain the delicate balance of power in the region. To protect his country and his new friends, Huo An gathers the warriors of thirty-six ethnic nations together to fight Tiberius in an incredible, epic battle.
