The venerable Lionel model train company is celebrating its 115th anniversary this year and is introducing several new items for the holiday season, as exhibited last week (Oct. 16) at The Toy Insider’s “HoliDAY of Play” event at New York’s Hearst Building.
In the larger-scaled G-Gauge ready-to-run train set category, the Pennsylvania Flyer G-Gauge Set features a realistic steam locomotive with a working headlight and authentic train whistle and bell sounds, as well as a colorful assortment of cars including a coal tender, gondola with crate load and caboose. The Polar Express G-Gauge Set has a steam locomotive with working headlight and authentic train sounds, coal tender, passenger coach with two opening doors, observation car with “disappearing hobo” feature and opening door–and three Polar Express figures (conductor, boy and hobo). The Snoopy Railways G-Gauge Set offers a steam locomotive with working headlight and authentic train sounds, tender, Snoopy Railways boxcar and cupola caboose.
An all-new toy line for preschoolers is called Imagineering, and consists of four differently-themed sets, each including a detailed train (engine, gondola, caboose, etc.), six feet of quick-connect track, and a functioning accessory that works along with the set.
The Crayola Imagination Express provides a Crayola steam engine, Crayola gondola and Color Me caboose allowing personalization via two Crayola washable markers—also The Crayon Factory, where kids can transform logs into Crayola boxes, and six feet of quick-connect track. A Batman vs. The Joker Set has Batman and Joker bullet engines and gondolas, six feet of quick-connect track and The Joker Funhouse for kids to race around the track and stop to create the Batmobile or The Joker Cycle. The John Deer Farm Adventure Set has John Deere steam engine, gondola with two chicken crates, caboose, quick-connect track and a John Deere crane for kids to help deliver the chickens. The Polar Expres featuring Santa’s Toy Factory has a Polar Express steam engine, gondola, passenger car, and observation car, quick-connect track, and the North Pole Toy Factory, where kids can wrap presents and load the polar sleigh to assist Santa’s delivery.
Lionel also has new O-Gauge ready-to-run remote-controlled electric train sets.
The Pennsylvania Flyer LionChief Remote Control Set has 0-8-0 locomotive with working headlight, puffing smoke, sounds and realistic parts, also a tender, tank car with three domes, boxcar and caboose. Additionally, it includes O-Gauge track, wall-pack power supply and a LionChief remote control. The Polar Express O-Gauge Set with LionChief Remote includes “All aboard the Polar Express” and “Ticket’s please” sound clips to go with a steam locomotive with working headlight, puffing smoke and authentic train sounds; it also has a coal tender, two passenger coaches with interior lighting, observation car and four articulated movie characters, and Polar Express decorative bell, besides the same track, power supply and LionChief remote.
The Lionel Zombie Apocalypse Survivors LionChief Set also comes with the track, power and remote, but is distinguished by a GP38 diesel locomotive with working headlight and sound effects including horn and bell, transparent stock car, flatcar with helicopter, flatcar with water tank and security caboose—and most notably, a pack of zombie and military figures.
