One thing I love about traveling is the opportunity to try foods native to a destination. This is especially true of fruits and vegetables. I’ve picked berries and chanterelles in Norway. And in Belize, I walked through a jungle farm with local farmer, Eladio Pop sampling fruits I had never seen before. There is something special and infinitely tastier about picking the fruit right off the tree or plant and eating it on the spot. But, of course, we can’t always be gallivanting around the world. Before I sampled these delicious new flavors, I wanted to get to know the fruits chosen for this exclusive collection. Here’s what I learned.
Originating in Southeast Asia, lychee is a sweet and fragrant fruit. It has a cultivation history dating back to 2000BC. In ancient China, lychee was the favored fruit of kings and queens who would have the fruit transported to the capital at a high cost to the Kingdom. Today it has found its niche in desserts, juices and ice creams…and now in the Lindt EXCELLENCE Exotic Fruits collection. Packed with healthy nutrients, lychee is said to aid in digestion and strengthen the immune system. Couple that with the health benefits of dark chocolate, and you have a delicious healthy winner.
The Acai is an indigenous berry commonly found in the rain forests of the Amazon in South America. This antioxidant-rich fruit has been heralded for centuries as a healing, immune-stimulating, energy-boosting fruit. The fruit of the Acai Palm tree bears small, deep purple berries known for their rich flavor and dark chocolate tasting notes. They give the Lindt EXCELLENCE Blackberry with Acai bar a noticeable tartness that balances perfectly with the chocolate. And again, we have those health benefits.
The pomegranate fruit is considered to have originated in the region of modern day Iran, and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region and northern India. It was introduced into Latin America and California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Today, it is widely cultivated throughout the Middle East and Caucasus region, Africa, India and Asia. Known in earlier times as the “Apple of Grenada,” the pomegranate sweet edible seeds are produced through a bright red flower bulb and considered part of the berry family. In the Lindt EXCELLENCE Pomegranate bar, the fruit adds a sweet accent to the rich chocolate, while also providing a subtle kick to the overall combination.
