LifeStraw®, a company that provides access to safe drinking water by converting microbiologically contaminated water into safe drinking water with their products, is in the midst of holding their LifeStraw Follow the Liters contest on Facebook. Five lucky winners will be selected to attend LifeStraw’s Follow the Liters program in Kenya this fall for their next safe water distribution campaign.
Water problems in schools in rural Kenya have a negative impact on children’s education as one of the main reasons of student absenteeism is illness. 60 out of 75% of school officials specifically mentioned waterborne diseases such as typhoid are the cause. The majority of schools in Kenya are still drawing drinking water from unimproved water sources. Globally, 2.5 million kids miss school each day because of illnesses from unsafe water.
With the LifeStraw Follow the Liters program for every consumer LifeStraw purchase, a portion of the funds are used to distribute LifeStraw Community water purifiers to primary schools in developing communities that don’t have ready access to safe drinking water. The program began in October 2014 where 1,646 high volume LifeStraw Community purifiers were distributed to 301 schools across Kenya’s Western Province which in turn provided 157,000 students with safe drinking water. By the end of November 2015, the reach of the LifeStraw Follow the Liters program will more than double, providing approximately 360,000 primary school students with safe drinking water at school.
In order to enter the LifeStraw Follow the Liters contest, visit their Facebook page. Entries will be accepted until September 27, 2015. Ten finalists will be selected that will be voted on by the public from September 29 – October 5, 2015, and winners will be announced by October 9, 2015. Prize winners will each receive one trip to Kenya as part of the LifeStraw team with dates of travel being October 29 – November 8, 2015. It includes local and international airfare, local transportation to and from the airport in Kenya, hotel and accommodations as well as food.
