In less than three weeks, Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (30-0-1. 17 KOs) will step into the ring to face the toughest opponent of his boxing career, Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs).
To show the media and boxing fans how he is preparing for this anticipating showdown, Team Santa Cruz held a workout on Tuesday at the Who’s Next Boxing Academy in La Puente, CA. As Santa Cruz worked on body punches and combinations in the ring, Voces Del Rancho played live music. Leo showed accuracy and speed on the double end bag and speed bag. He looks to be in great shape and in good spirits for his upcoming fight against Mares. Both guys will face each other Saturday, August 29th, at the Staples Center. The last time Staples Center hosted a boxing fight was November 2012, where Leo and Abner were the co-main and main events that night. Now, almost three years later, the main event boxing fans have been hoping to see for quite some time now, will be aired live on primetime ESPN Premier Boxing Champions.
On Monday, August 10th, the current WBC World Super Bantamweight Champ turned 27. The birthday celebration continued as Leo’s team presented him with a birthday cake from Edible Supply after his work out, and everyone in attendance sang “Happy Birthday”.
Leo Santa Cruz has defeated his WBC World Super Bantamweight Championship belt four times. He was born in Huetamo, Michoacan, Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, CA. At the age of 15, Leo won a world amateur championship. With nearly 150 amateur win, he made his professional debut in October 2006 knocking out Pedro Silva in the second round. Over the past nine years, Santa Cruz has remained undefeated with only one draw. His debut at 126 lbs was against Jose Cayetano on the undercard of the Mayweather-Paquiao in May 2015. Santa Cruz grabbed a unanimous decision win in that 10 round bout.
Supreme Boxing caught up with the champ to talk about his thoughts against former three division world champion Abner Mares.
“We’ve been working really hard because we want to win this fight,” said Santa Cruz. “This is the most important fight of my career right now, and I want to win it. If I lose this fight, it’s not good, so we are going to go out there and give it all.”
Santa Cruz is happy and excited this fight has finally been made for fight fans. He wants to show the world that he deserves to be on this level in the boxing world. “I am here to fight the best. Beating Mares will put me to the next level, and it will show that I deserve to be up there where all the fans are putting me at, and hopefully get the win and look for a title shot at 126,” said Santa Cruz.
Team Santa Cruz knows they have to be smart in this fight. The team plans to apply pressure and stay on top of Mares to break him down. With the advantage of height and reach against Mares, team Santa Cruz is ready to box with him as well. “We’re going to do what we have to do to get the win. That’s more important,” said Santa Cruz. “We’re going to get the win, and whatever we have to do, we’ll do it so we can become victorious.”
Santa Cruz dedicates this fight to all the fans. He always wants to give boxing fans great, and entertaining fights by giving his best with brawling and staying in the middle of the ring and exchanging punches.
